The shadowed Earthbender was Toph's first design, she was going to a muscular guy, but the creators turned her into a small girl :) There is some speculation as to whether the shadowed Airbender in the beginning is Aang though, take a look at the screen cap below, and if you look closely it looks as though the Airbender has a mustache, but I don't know who he is...
