It's like everyone's forgotten the fact that they broke up for a reason, Dru kept cheating on him by sleeping around therefore stabbing him in the back and breaking his heart, oh..and maybe the fact that he loves Buffy more than he ever loved Dru. My memory might be a bit fuzzy but I think I may recall the fact that he gave Buffy a speech declaring that she was "the one" and that he's loved her more than anyone. On the one hand evil because, well, they were killers and so on. On the other hand they had feelings that would make them more human. I loved Spike when he was a real badass and I believe they only ruined his character after season 5. I've always been against the whole Spuffy thing even though I didn't dislike it when Buffy was repeatedly rejecting him. He never cared about or loved Harmony, she was just a booty call. And Anya...
