Analyzing the Twilight Phenomena

First off, I’d like to mention that I am not a psychologist. Everything Ты read is just my own analyzing and since I am interested in Psychology and Behaviorism I decided to make an Статья of what I think is the basic reason for Twilight’s enormous popularity. I hope Ты will enjoy it.

Recently I came across a post at the Форумы that сказал(-а) about Twilight: ” [it’s] a bit childish to say its a failure, because if it is, then why do so many people (And not just crazy teenage girls either) Любовь Twilight huh?”.

I have seen this argument countless of times before, and remember being shut up by it seven years назад when I was debating over the meaninglessness of World of Warcraft with my brother. I think his exact words were: “It has millions of Фаны around the world, how could they all be wrong?”

How indeed? Let’s leave WoW alone and start by analyzing what the Twilight phenomena is for a bit. We know that it has millions of fans, and most of them, или at least a very large part of them, are girls in their teens (although I could be wrong since I have yet to come across any statistics). Its fanbase is also known for being very obsessed with the series, even to the point of Актёрское искусство violently towards people who don’t share their views. This in itself is not unheard of: I remember that Harry Potter Фаны were criticized the same way years назад when it first became a big deal, and people who considered it to be nothing but a children’s series got into heated arguments with Фаны who insisted upon its literary value. There was also the problem of several schools trying to ban the Книги on grounds of being Satanic, which led to the fierce defending of Harry Potter’s general themes. I don’t know if this has actually resulted in violence или not, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it had.

We also know that Twilight became a success very quickly, sprouting Фильмы and merchandise in just a couple of years after it was published and became a New York Times bestseller. Needless to say, after that its success was guaranteed: еще and еще people became curious to see what all the hype was about and purchased the books. Because of the explosive success Twilight became a very commercial brand, and even now it’s hard to avoid coming across Cullen crests, Twilight towels and even Twilight toilet paper. (And yes, Twilight toilet paper does exist, probably to the delight of many Antis.)

But why does it appeal so deeply to teenagers and even older readers?

First of all, the main characters are teenagers, which makes it easily relatable for those who are still in their teens. And naturally everyone older than that has been a teenager once, and perhaps it makes them nostalgic about the awkward years they survived through. As most might know, there’s also a well-known Фан group called “Twi-moms” who are obsessed over the series and are often ridiculed for their seemingly incomprehensible fanatism over a piece of teenage fiction. But is it really so bizarre?

Here’s what Wikipedia says about the subject of “Escapist fiction”: “Escapist fiction is fiction which provides a psychological escape from thoughts of everyday life by immersing the reader in exotic situations или activities.”

Perhaps Bella’s situation is relatable to mature women in еще ways than people think. For an 18-year-old girl she spends a lot of time pondering about getting older which might appeal to middle-aged women and teenagers alike. Throughout the series Bella has a good excuse to not make any major decisions about things because the other characters (such as the Cullens and the werewolves) are in possession of superior knowledge and power. She is also offered the undivided attention of several idealized men without her needing to do much to earn it.

Is it really so bizarre that a middle-aged Twilight-fan who spends most of her time taking care of everyday things such as work, childcare and taking care of her Главная would fall in Любовь with the idea of being offered eternal youth, being the center of a man’s attention and not having to take responsibility for anything for a change?

I think in many ways the phenomena is еще understandable when it comes to older women than young; it offers them an escape from the mundane worries of life. Stephenie Meyer has also stated that she originally wrote the Книги for herself only, and I think that shines through the writing, as many of the books’ themes revolve around aging, the desire and need to have children, getting attention and preserving your youthful beauty. These themes are not quite usual in teenage literature, as many teenagers take their youth and attention for granted, but very common in literature directed to older readers.

But how can the same book be so Популярное among teenage girls, then? I think the reasons are different. Many teenage girls are insecure about their looks and inexperienced with boys. There’s rivalry between even Друзья about who’s еще Популярное and this in turn fuels the feelings of inadequacy.

What Twilight is offering is the chance to land the hottest, richest, maturest and bestest guy in the entire world. And the catch is that in order to land him, Ты don’t need to change who Ты are. He doesn’t judge you. He thinks you’re beautiful even if Ты don’t. He devotes himself to Ты entirely without paying attention to other girls, even if they are prettier than you. He is better than everybody else in everything, even better than Ты - but Ты don’t need to feel threatened by his skills because the reason for his being better is external and has nothing to do with *your* personal skills. Ты have a good excuse to accept diamonds, cars and other benefits from him without seeming shallow, because he insists Ты accept them against your will and because he thinks you’re the most selfless person there ever was even if Ты do accept them.

Teenagers, who are generally inexperienced in love, also tend to idolize the opposite sex. A teenage girl might think that boys are еще experienced and intriguing because they’re Актёрское искусство a certain way in order to cover their own insecurity. Teenage boys might think that girls are еще experienced and masterful at toying with them, because that’s the cover girls put up in order to hide their insecurity. Later in life Ты will laugh at both your own actions and the actions of that once-so-gorgeous member of the opposite sex, but when you’re young Ты can’t analyze the situation as easily.

Therefore it’s understandable that teenage girls can relate to Bella’s worship of Edward and even Jacob. In the Книги Jacob doesn’t give up on Bella even though she rejects him, and acts very aloof about the whole thing. However, we are talking about a guy who’s sixteen/seventeen, has never had a girlfriend and as far as we know no experience with girls whatsoever – his unattached behavior as well as his straight-forward and self-assured physical advances would be very unlikely in real life.
I think his character reflects the image teenage girls have of boys their own age: that they are somehow еще secure with themselves than they themselves are. Both Edward and Jacob’s self-assured behavior also saves Bella the trouble of taking the first steps in their relationship which, to a young girl, would be a very intimidating thing, and also something she might automatically expect guys to take care of.

To get back to the subject of “how can millions of Фаны be wrong?”, I have the following to say: just because something is Популярное does not mean it necessarily has any literary, cultural, political, social или other meaningful value. A book или a movie can be Популярное among people without filling any of this criteria. That’s because of a phenomena called “the Bandwagon effect.” Wikipedia has this to say about the Bandwagon Effect:
“The bandwagon effect is well-documented in behavioral science and has many applications. The general rule is that conduct или beliefs spread among people, as fads and trends clearly do, with "the probability of any individual adopting it increasing with the proportion who have already done so". As еще people come to believe in something, others also "hop on the bandwagon" regardless of the underlying evidence. The tendency to follow the actions или beliefs of others can occur because individuals directly prefer to conform, или because individuals derive information from others.”

Bandwagon effect is the best friend of any commercial designer: by advertising a product they are in fact planting the image that “everybody has/needs this product” into the consumers head. When the consumer becomes convinced enough that this is true, they hop on to the “bandwagon” and buy the product. Scientifically speaking, this behavior makes sense as a person will only live for so and so long, and therefore needs to be able to derive information from others because they simply won’t live long enough to learn everything by personal experience. Adaptation to your cultural and social surroundings also gives Ты an advantage in surviving and ensures good chances at natural selection.

As I already mentioned, the Twilight series is a very commercial trademark. Since it’s everywhere, even those who would otherwise feel no interest toward the series might read it and like it because “everybody else does and millions of Фаны must be right.” Especially teenagers might not be as experienced in media criticism to notice many of the things some antis don’t like about the Twilight series, and even if they do they don’t need to care about the criticism unless it comes from their own group of friends, since they are the ones they identify with. That’s because the Bandwagon effect is related to the Herd instinct, meaning that Ты will еще likely follow your own “herd” than any other.

Ты might also change your opinion because you’re influenced by an Authority. An Authority is somebody who Ты idolize and look up to, even еще than your own herd. For example, a Twilight Фан with a crush on Robert Pattinson might change her mind after Чтение about Robert Pattinson’s negative opinion of the Twilight series. Since Robert Pattinson has begun to symbolize their fandom, his authority overrides her herd’s authority. The Фан might continue being a Фан of Pattison’s, but abandon their original fandom.

This is naturally a two-way street. People might like Twilight because everybody else does, but people can also hate it because everyone else does. And by “everybody else” I mean your own herd, the people around Ты who influence Ты and your decisions. Also antis have Authorities that they follow, be it an influential friend/member of the family или an idol: for example a person could be a rabid Фан of Robert Pattinson and get a negative image of the Twilight series without Чтение it because of his comments. или a person could look up to their older sister and be influenced by her opinion of the Twilight series. Even if the person would later read the series, the negative image they already have will affect how they analyze what they read.

All this doesn’t mean that people should feel bad about liking Twilight. Just as something can be Популярное without having much value, people don’t *need* to like things because they have value, but because they are entertaining или make Ты feel good. What Ты like is a matter of personal choice and can’t be argued with. Also, having mutual interests as your Друзья have is ultimately a good thing and makes Ты bond with them. That’s why it doesn’t really matter if Ты hate Twilight with them или if Ты Любовь it, because the personal satisfaction and bonding experience is just as strong.

I would be interested to hear what Ты think about my theories. Feel free to add your own opinions!
I’ve read many lists pointing out Twilight “Plot Holes”, but еще often than not, the lists aren’t very valid at all. Half of them are usually just complaints, pointing out something they don’t like about Twilight (Example:” Why would Вампиры go to high school?”, или “Why does Bella have so many friends?”). The rest are just factually incorrect, или can be logically theorized. These are usually followed by “Stephenie Meyer obviously ditched history class”, или “Hasn’t Stephenie ever heard of logic?”, или my personal favorite, “I would know, I had a lesson about it...

aagh! I accidentally deleted this when I was trying to Редактировать it. here it is again with a new title:

Bella could have gotten over Edward in New Moon and even had a real relationship with Jacob in time, but she wouldn't let herself. She felt that moving on would diminish или discredit her twu wuv with Edward and the pain she felt after he left. She wants to believe she can't get over it because she wants to believe that what they had was extraordinary, not like any other teenage romance. She wants to believe no one else in the world can relate to what she's going through. She was alone because she...

*Most I made up, a few I admit I saw on a video but I stated these ways in my own words so it is therefore not plagiarism*

1) Tell a fangirl that you'll send her a T-shirt with rare pictures of Edward Cullen on the front and back in two days, make sure she gets extremely excited. When the two days go by, send her a T-shirt with pics of Hagrid from Harry Potter instead.

2) Tell the fangirls that all gay men sparkle.
3) Tell the fangirls that the Quielete Волколаки have major anger management issues if they turn into beasts when they got irritable...
4) Ask them for their Twilight merchandise,...

I think this spot and the majority of it's members have worked to ensure that when we talk about things we dislike about the series it's things we feel strongly about или have an actual point to make, not just mindless hating and that when we poke fun we try to keep an eye on the line between fun mockery and plain rudeness, even though that line can be debatable или hard to see. Still, there are some cases when I can see Фаны feeling left out, singled out или wanting out completely, and I don't like that. Part of the problem is something us antis can't really help with, which is that not many...

i had nothing to do absolutely nothing to do. As i was so bored i began drawing through one of Dimitri's Избранное cowboy novels i had a feeling this would annoy him. suddenly i felt someone looming above me i turned around, it was Dimitri just as i thought he was going to be annoyed with me for sure.
"What are Ты doing Roza?" he asked
I grinned. he picked up the novel that i was drawing in i hope he didn't see it.
"Ah one of Избранное books." he opened the book and saw my lovely work of art. He frowned at me.
"Busted." i laughed nervously
"Rose why are Ты destroying my books?" he asked sternly...

I used to be a die-hard Twilight fan. (see my username. Damn I wish I'd chosen ANYTHING else sometimes.)

I still like the book in small doses now, and I even write fanfiction for it, but now I've looked critically at SMeyer's characters, and I think I realize what people are talking about when they say Bella лебедь is a Mary Sue.

As a person who has seen it from both sides, I'd like to say that maybe Twilight Фаны didn't see Bella like that to begin with because she has so many "flaws".

I'm not really a mega-supporter of Bella's neediness. And I even, admittedly, wonder why she took Edward back after New Moon. Normal people with lives and better things to do would say, "Hell no am I taking Ты back. Ты left me crying in a forest, and Ты think I'll just come running back to you? Ты wanna commit suicide, go right ahead while I get the popcorn."

I still like Twilight. But maybe Bella лебедь was kind of 2-Dimensional.

I'm just sayin' Bella is one of the worst role Модели ever when it comes to love, sex and life choices and should not have allowed to be published in any shape или form. I mean, when she's made the heroine of the story and marketted at teenage girls.

1. She's obsessively in Любовь with a control freak stalker.

Unfortunately it seems the vast majority of the Twilight fangirls are too with the very same freak.

2. She wants him so bad that she'll abandone everyone else she loves so that she could be with him. Even when it means she'll practically have to become a blood-drinking corpse.

(The movie 'Eclipse'...

I felt a compelling need to write this Статья because recently I have found myself еще constantly thrust into situations and debates where I have to defend the Harry Potter fandom against the Twilight fandom, which I despise so much. My best friend and her family are actually major pro-Twilight fans. This past evening made me realize that there are so many reasons why Harry Potter is much еще awesome than Twilight, and its not just the obvious ones either. Thus, I give Ты all the evidence Ты will ever need to successfully pwn a Twilight Фан trying to bring your fandom down.

Obvious Reasons...

The people on this spot who know me will be aware I'm an anti, but I think a part of using this spot fairly means me not only talking when I have something against Twilight, but also fessing up when I don't think Meyer/the books/actros/etc are in the wrong. I've heard a lot about how many of Meyer's plot points are too similar to those in other vampire/fantasy stories. Well, that's never the way it's put. It's usually closer to "she totally ripped off _____. That's a stolen idea!" and I wanted to talk about why I actually disagree with most of those accusations. I say 'most of' and not 'all...

Ok, so I visited a fanclub not too long назад and I noticed this one Вопрос I asked; "If Bella killed Renesmee, would Edward forgive her?" или something like that.

I looked at the comments, and at first they were fine. But then as they progressed to the еще Последнее ones, I had one girl saying what a stupid Вопрос to ask, and some other crackhead telling me to go f**k myself.

Being my highly emotional self, I was irked to no end and I responded to these comments.

ok but if Ты concentrate and look beyond all the adjectives s.meyer uses for descriving how beautiful and sparkly edward is and really LOOK at the story and at their characters Ты will realize the truth about bella that is
