When she said that, I thought: "Uh, Katherine, what are you talking about? No you didn't."

In 2x01 she said it herself: "The truth is, I never loved you. It was always Stefan." There is no real reason for why she would say that if she loved Damon too, as she professed in 3x09. If she REALLY loved Damon, she would never have treated him in such a cruel, heartless manner. If she was LYING in 2x01, then that doesn't make sense either, because if she REALLY LOVED Damon, then she's just ruined any chances she had of being with him. Why would she do that? Is she scared, shy, unsure? Definitely not. The writers showed us that Katherine can love another person in 2x04, with Stefan. So to claim that she just said she didn't love Damon because it was easier than admitting the truth doesn't wash with what we know about her. In 'The House Guest', she reveals that she was given the choice to save just one brother, and she chose Stefan, even though it meant Damon would be killed. I don't know why she said she loved Damon as well as Stefan in 3x09, but the only reasons I can think of are more related to the writers, and not the story/characters, as there is little or no evidence that Katherine's love for Damon was genuine. I think the writers either 'forgot' what happened in the past 2 seasons, and had Katherine say she loved them both as she was leaving town (and the show) for an indefinite period of time (i.e. she might never return), as a convenient way to wrap up the storyline. As for any hard evidence of her 'love' for Damon, well, I would be interested in seeing it. But I wondered what other DE fans thought.

^I highly doubt that @dgrhgty. In 2x07 'Masquerade', she admits to 'checking' up on Stefan throughout the years. She never did that to Damon, did she? I see that fans have picked 'She loves them in different ways, with Stefan it's real love, with Damon just' (I'm assuming the word is) caring.' But I'm not talking about caring. I'm talking about LOVE. With DE, only the most twisted, malicious fans can claim that Damon does NOT love Elena. Everything he does is for her. Even if it's wrong. Even if it makes her HATE him. Even if it would mean letting another person die so she could live. When you love someone, you show it. In my opinion, Katherine has shown that she DOESN'T love Damon more times than she's shown that she LOVES him. Does that make sense? When Damon has moved on emotionally, and no longer wants her, then she makes a move on him. Yet when she knew that she had his heart, she didn't want him. When he was over her, she did. He's like a challenge to her. That's not love. I don't really get why 29 percent of voters picked that she loves both brothers equally, when I think the show set out to prove (at least in the first 2 seasons), that her 'love' was very UNEQUAL. Maybe they weren't paying attention. Maybe they're giving Katherine the benefit of the doubt. I don't know. Here's what I do know:

Katherine pretended to be in the tomb when she was actually alive (or 'undead') and well for 145 years. She could've gone looking for Damon at any time. But she didn't. If she loved both boys equally, she wouldn't have 'checked up' on Stefan either, she would have avoided them both. But she didn't. Even though she was no longer with him and he thought she was dead (until Damon showed up), she still thought about Stefan and couldn't resist to go and spy on him just to see him and how he was doing.

Damon gives her another chance in 2x01. After a passionate make-out session which almost results in sex, she then coolly informs him that she never loved him, it was always Stefan. Ouch! Why would she lie if she really loved him? Why would she say that she loved Stefan if she loved him and Damon equally? There's no logic, no matter which way you try and twist it to Damon's favour. Why would she be afraid? She plays the poor guy for a fool again and again. She wants to be sure of her power over him, and make him suffer. Like I said before, that's not love.

In 'The House Guest' (2x14?) Kat reveals to Damon that she was given the choice to save just one brother. Instead of backing out or refusing to play, she chooses to save Stefan, thus condemning Damon to death.

Kat may have done a few nice things for Damon too. Like delivering the antidote to him in 2x22. But when it really mattered the most, her 'love' for him never came through.
