i understand some people are against gay marriage (although i do not understand why)
but even if i was against gay marriage i would still be against proposition 8 because people should have the free will to do what they want
if you don't agree with gay marriage then don't have a gay marriage

People should be able to become legal partners of whoever they want. If the church or whatever doesn't want to marry them, then at least they could get married (or actually, legal partners) legaly. I don't think church should marry them if it doesn't want to because of the religion and all, but they should be able to become legal partners if they want to. That is why the separation of church and state exists.

I've said this many times, but here's my view:

The separation of church and state goes both ways. As a clever bumpersticker once read, "Don't preach in my classrooms, I won't teach in your church," so to speak. My thing with gay marriage is I believe it should be legalized, and that couples can get legal, binding documents giving them all the legal rights of other couples, and, if they so choose, find a church that will agree to marry them. A church, however, remains sovereign and as such can reserve the right NOT to ceremoniously marry a gay couple.

Some may say this will lead to discrimination lawsuits, but the fact of the matter is that this country has freedom of religion, and I don't believe in forcing religions to change. I feel that if this does cause discrimination lawsuits, then the persons who instigated such suits will not win them, especially as most churches are very clear from the beginning on where they stand on this issue.

So, if I understand it correctly, Proposition 8 is in fact an attempt to make gay marriage unvalid/illegal again?

I simply do not understand why people feel so threatened by gay marriage.
Amazondebs, I read that sentence somewhere ("Against gay marriage? Then don't get one and shut up.") somewhere and I love it.
Why does someone elses marriage threaten your own? By the way: is there still such a thing as the sanctitute (what a weird word btw) of marriage? Does gay marriage threaten that sanctitude more than, idk, the three-day-marriages that some young celebrities have nowadays?

Disgusting. It's funny though i thought most developed countries where generally trying to treat people MORE equally. Especially "we're great and fair" America - step in the wrong direction anyone?

I agree completely with Cinders. I am wholeheartedly for any couple having the ability to marry, but the house of worship also has the right to refuse to perform the ceremony.

For the longest time, I thought that protecting the ability of the church to refuse meant I was "Against Gay Marriage." Which I now know is entirely untrue :)

There is nothing wrong with loving someone and you should be able to show your love for that person without being abused or treated like a freak.

Though I'm not from California, if I was I would've voted no on Proposition 8. To me, God is not an excuse for preventing people from marrying the one they love.
