I think another family should take care of the child while the single parent is in medical care...if the single parent gets better, the child can live with them again.

Yes. When or if the parent is in a better state of mind the child shoudl be returned, and I think the parent should be allowed visits with the child while they recover but when they are in that state of mind they shouldn't be solely responsible for a kid in my opinion.

I agree with Oli, the child should be temporarily set with someone in their family (e.g. a God parent) or in the case of not having family to live with then in foster care. When the parent receives proper treatment and is recovering or has recovered the child should get to live with their parent :D.

Yes. Even though the parent failed to commit suicide, they are clearly not thinking straight. No child should be kept with that parent for a period of time. When that parent is in a stable condition, they can have the custody of the child once again. In the time being, the child should stay with a close relative as the parent recovers.

I don't know....I think it would need to be judged on a case-by-case basis.
There are a lot of factors. If they're depressed, it's pretty easy to just put them on prozac or something. What if there are no other family members, or what if there are but they are just as bad, i.e. abusive or with other problems? What if the parent has decided they want to live after all? There's just a lot that could depend on the situation.

I think so. At least while the parent figures things out.

instead of doing the extreme thing by taking away the chlid because thatll only influnce the parent more to comite sucide help the parent insted. If you give the parent hope you give the child hope.

In America, the parent would be put into a mental hospital under 51/50. The child would be placed with relatives, friends, or foster care until the parent is stable. I think this system works but child protective services should check in with the parent every few months to make sure the home is a safe environment and the child is getting the care needed. Unfortunately, CPS socials workers have extremely heavy caseloads and cannot give as much attention to less dire situations.

I agree with katiemariie.

They should take the child until the parent is deemed stable, then I believe they should get a second shot.

Yes, the child should be taken away for two major reasons; the drastic effects this may have on the child and the unstable mind of the parent. Of course, if a child witnesses a death in any form, the trauma will stay with him or her for possibly as long as she may live and produce many more negative effects in this child when an adult.
Also, a person who commits suicide is not in a healthy state of mind. There could be many dangerous causes that would make a person, especially a parent, want to end their life. What if these causes could effect the child as well? Most of all, if a parent (due to any reasn) is capable of harming themselves, what is preventing them from harming their own children?
This is why I believe taking the child away would be the best coarse of action for both parent and child.
I'm sorry if this wasn't an ideal opinion to say in a debate, I admit I just joined and still learning to do this...

I think it depends on the mental state of the person afterwards.

I agree with Jillywinkles, you can't judge these situations the same.
Sometimes it would perhaps be better to take the child away, while in different scenarios that wouldn't be the right thing to do.
The parent might try again if you take the children away when it wouldn't if they had stayed.
Like disney_prince said, it depends on the mental state.

I knew a woman who tried to commit suicide. When that failed, her kids were her anchor for going through rehab and getting better.

I say no,because why would anyone want to make this parent feel EVEN worse by taking away their child? it just doesn't make sense to make someone feel even worse and they might do it again and suceed..and then what for the child? your making BOTH the parents and childs life worse by taking away the child,If the child's old enough he/she can help the parent though they're tough times because after all that's what family's for, helping eachother through hard times and if the child's an infant or a baby I still think it would be a bad idea to take the child away because it's even harder if the child's a baby,I think they should ask a relative of the parent to come over to the house and help with the baby and they could get the parent through the hard time...so that is why I say taking the child away won't help...
