She's just about the biggest hero in China. She's pretty much treated as a royal by some people and in the sequel, that guy from the other kingdom thinks she'll be an even better daughter-in-law than the Chinese Emperor's own three daughters, which is really saying something.

neither are technically "royalty". in the first movie, Mulan is shown doing chores. Royals don't do chores. and Shang is a captain in the army, and becomes a general in the sequel, so i'd say he's closer to royalty than Mulan.
