I NEVER knew anyone so keenly alive to a joke as the king was. He seemed to live only for joking. To tell a good story of the joke kind, and to tell it well, was the surest road to his favor. Thus it happened that his seven ministers were all noted for their accomplishments as jokers. They all took after the king, too, in being large, corpulent, oily men, as well as inimitable jokers. Whether people grow fat by joking, или whether there is something in fat itself which predisposes to a joke, I have never been quite able to determine; but certain it is that a lean joker is a rara avis in terris....

TRUE! -- nervous -- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will Ты say that I am mad? The disease had sharpened my senses -- not destroyed -- not dulled them. From childhood's час I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same Источник I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My сердце to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.

Then- in my childhood, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, или the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the sun that round me rolled
In its autumn tint of gold,
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the облако that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.
