Benny is based on Benvolio. But he also has some Mercutio's rash and impulsive attitude. James McAvoy, voice of Gnomeo, сказал(-а) that Gnomeo is based on Romeo but also has some stuff borrowed from Mercutio. So Gnomeo is based on Romeo and Benny is based on Benvolio. Each has a touch of Mercutio.
