In recent titles in the Sonic series, Sonic Team has adopted a "return to the roots" approach to development that aims to return the series to it's 2D platformer origins in the so-called "classic era" of Sonic. Starting with Sonic Unleashed, other characters are being pushed aside to give Sonic himself the spotlight. Tails, Sonic's own sidekick and best friend, has also received this treatment. While he is still relevant to the plot and games for the most part, he has nonetheless been reduced to the status of a non-playable character. Before you bring up Sonic Boom, know that, as a spin-off, Sonic Boom is not relevant to the main series of Sonic games, which is what is being discussed. Tails being playable in Sonic Boom does not mean he will be playable in future main series titles.
I, for one, feel that Tails' status as an NPC does not suit him and his importance to the series. For me, it feels as if Sonic Team is downplaying his significance as a character, raising up Sonic as the only relevant character. It is also contradictory to the "return to the roots" approach that Sonic Team seems to have adopted as of late, since Tails was playable in most of the classic Sonic games, even if he wasn't completely relevant to the plot. Even if Sonic Team does not make the rest of the characters playable, I feel they at least should start making Tails playable again. Tails is essentially SEGA's equivalent of Luigi, and Nintendo has no problem making Luigi playable in recent Mario games, even if he wasn't exactly relevant to the plot, so why does SEGA feel the need to sideline Tails?
