How does the dueling work? (for those who tried it before it went to maintenance)

Another Вопрос I have cause I was never able to try the duels before. How do they work? Do Ты and the one Ты challenge both have to be online the same time? Is it like fighting each other или just making a spell еще accurate and powerful than the other person? I'm curious :P
