Three.
“We won’t get caught,” she сказал(-а) for the thousandth time, a smile dancing on her lips. “Stop being such a goody-goody.”
“Shut up. I’m a damn good kid,” I said. “I haven’t gotten in trouble at this school yet, and I'd like to keep it that way.”
“We won’t get in trouble. I know what I’m doing. Ты can trust me.”
“Trust isn’t the issue. The aides are.”
“Miranda.” She looked at me. “We. Will. Not. Get. Caught.”
“Yes we will.”
“No we won’t. Just come on.”
I paused. “Do Ты think they have клубника milkshakes?”
“We’d have to go there to find out.”
“Alright.”
We stored our backpacks in the girl’s bathroom in the A hallway. It was never used as anything еще than a place to smoke, so we figured no one would discover our backpacks in one of the stalls.
Then, trying and failing to act natural for the security cameras that always watched the halls, we moved towards the front of the school. Our hands were tightly clamped on our mouths to keep the giggles inside us.
I half expected the principal himself to Показать up and yell at us, but we managed to push open the front doors of the school and slip away without getting caught.
Feeling like a total badass and light with freedom, I laughed as she took my hand and we jogged off the school grounds. We crossed the улица, уличный and strode past the gas station, where a group of kids a couple years older than us were smoking. We weren’t the only ones skipping school that day.
We stepped inside the McDonald’s (they did have клубника shakes), ordered our food, and sat down for a long and leisurely lunch.
“I keep feeling like someone’s gonna bust us,” I commented.
She laughed, throwing a fry at me. “You worry too much.”
“You don’t worry enough.”
She raised an eyebrow.
I shrugged. “Don’t be too carefree, Kelse. Ты might get hurt.”
“How?” She stuck a barbeque sauce covered chicken nugget in her mouth.
“Let too many people in and they’ll use you. They’ll hurt you.”
“Are Ты going to hurt me?”
“Not if I can help it.”
“Good.”
She leaned across the booth and kissed me.
Two months later, I broke her heart.
