Is there a difference between Doughnuts and Пончики или is it only the spelling?

Some сказал(-а) that it's only the American/British spelling thing but others сказал(-а) that they're actually 2 different things... is it?

It's not an error, just the British ("doughnuts") and American ("donuts") spellings.
