Me reminiscing
Hello, it's been years since I was actually active, and I thought to myself, man I wonder how good old Fanpop is doing right now. How old was I when I was truly active at this site? 12? 14? Either way, I was probably cringy and immature. Woah, look at that Kataralover, Riku, Cruella, and Zanhar are still active! In fact, the majority of people I associate with this site are still here. Lol, I like how deathding posts so much that he is among one of the most Популярное Теги on this site.

New Values With Characters
For people, who don't know I used to value development, complexity, and establishment above all else. Even though none of these things are bad, they aren't what makes a good character in my opinion.

Starting off with development, what it means is character changes essentially. I think development is quite overrated in the analysis community, it's not what the character is. It's an end destination for a character after an arc. I mean if the development is done well then great, but all the basic parts of a character are far еще important. Not to mention, characters don't even need to develop to be well-made.

Developed characters I don't care for

Далее up on the Список is complexity, another thing I don't look at anymore when deciding if X character is good или not. The reason mainly being that characters who are complex, are either hard to understand или consist of a myriad of traits by their very definition("the state или quality of being intricate или complicated"). Which again, isn't a bad thing, but complexity isn't something to celebrate unless it was done well. Because like development, complexity doesn't automatically equal an outstanding character. A complex character can have a lot of bland или poorly applied traits или be hard to understand being an accident или in an unenjoyable way.

A complex character I thought was boring

Alright, last one, establishment, this is mostly referring to characters whose motives and traits are explained. This is the вишня on top, not the ice cream itself, and I never should've treated it as such. Even though having personalities explained is a nice little piece of info to have, it still isn't anywhere near as important as the personality itself. Not only that, but it hardly affects much of the character we presently see. A bland personality explained is still a bland personality.

An established character I found poorly made

On to what I do value: unique, expressive personality with well-balanced traits(of both flaws and positive traits), good presentation(i.e fitting and well-done voice actors, gestures, and character design). I like this value a lot more, it's еще specific and applies to the overall. It's not extras that could improve a character(development или establishment) nor something that can be a good thing(complex characters). Personality and presentation is the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about a character as those things make up a good chunk of someone's experience. Personality and presentation are the main foundation of a character. Ты don't have an animated character without those elements which is why they are the most important parts.

My Current Obsessions
Total Drama? Nah, Dangaronpa is where it's at! Specifically both DR 2 and DR V3, those are great expect me to mention them over and over now. Ты know when Digi сказал(-а) during his Kyobashi Maid video that he and the Автор were on the same wavelength. That's how I feel about Kodaka, we have the same interests and values when it comes to characters, presentation, and story.

Over the вверх characters with weird, unique quirks count me in! A dark mystery with high stakes that's a death game, yes, please! Character designs that resemble each talent through fashion(i.e Музыка notes on Kaede's юбка and hairpins), what a brilliant idea! Gestures and facial expressions who at all times Показать the character's personality, thank you! I mean the sprites are just thee best, and I Любовь looking at them.

One of my Избранное characters

Another obsession, I have right now is the SCP universe. It's a bunch of scary internet stories tied together with the SCP foundation at its front. What does SCP stand for? standard containment procedures или secure, contain and protect. SCP is both the foundation and the anomalies they try/do contain. SCPs range from everyday stuff with a Сверхъестественное twist(i.e living buses who feed on humans(SCP 2086)) to unknown, scary creatures who would try to kill you(scariest being Cousin Johnny imo(SCP 2852)). There is other stuff in-between the range, Ты have objects(such as Еда items или living toys) или places(like an infinite IKEA(SCP 3008)). An SCP Ты probably know is SCP 173 a statue who kills Ты when Ты blink. SCPs are cool in that it's a fictional universe filled with weird, creepy stuff. It's so vast as well, the universe is so well-made that there are actually people who think it's real. Here's SCP 173 btw:

Scary Fella

The last obsession, I have is musical animatics, I have been watching these non-stop. I've been lately trying to get into other aspects of shows other than the Письмо parts most people including myself got accustomed to analyzing(for example, characters или story). These animatics are helpful when trying to look at other parts, like character design, facial expressions and shot composition. Not only that, but the ones on Youtube are really well-made. Here are a few of my favorites(major spoilers for all of the musicals):

zanhar1 "Either way, I was probably cringy and immature." Lmao me each new year looking at last year's posts. While I do still value complex characters. I have to say, 'oh God, yes' to this; "unique, expressive personality with well-balanced." Uniqueness of a character isn't valued enough imo. There are so many characters out there that if an author can make one that stands out, I eat that right up. A good balance of flaws and good traits is also important. Too much of one can impact my enjoyment of a character. Also SCP's are the shit.

As someone who often prefers simple characters just because my experience with them is better, I'm curious about why you think complex characters are better. To me, it seems like both are equal in value until experience comes to play,

zanhar1 No problem. I don't know, honestly. I think that it's partially because I like analyzing characters and having complex characters makes that funner since there is more to unpack. Complexity usually tends to go hand in hand with characters who have depth. By extension I feel like complex characters are more relatable and that makes it easier for me to like them. Like I love Bellatrix but she's simpler than my other faves, I don't relate to her at all. Azula, though an antagonist, has so many layers and facets that I can relate to her in some way, even though she is also very unlike me. But on the other end I also like ambiguous characters that leave lots of room for headcanons and more freedom in fics. And I don't mind seeing a character who is more lax in that there's not much to analyze. So I guess it's pros and cons. It depends on my mood, which one I prefer. Typically though I like the more complex characters for the reasons above.

Peaceful_Critic Interesting, that seems fairly reasonable. I do, however, don't really care about relatability(it's at the bottom of my list on what makes a good character) and simple characters are more easily expressed which makes them more likely to be better communicated visually, and more coherent because there's less to keep track of. That being said, I suppose that does make them less fun to analysis. Yeah, I agree, there's definitely pro and cons to both types of characters. Ah, I remember liking them for the same reason, but by the same logic you like them, I hate them. The problem comes from the reliance on the viewer to make a more interesting character rather than the character be interesting because of how they are written. It just feels lazy now

Seeing a fellow Danganronpa Fan and one who feels in such a way concerning Kodaka, is certainly worthy of note. Quite Relatable, I must say.
