First Clip From New Sailor Moon English Dub

Usagi meets Mamoru in this first clip from the upcoming new English dub of the original Sailor Moon anime.

dub, which I was fortunate to view the first two episodes of at Anime Expo. In this clip, we have the now iconic first meeting of Usagi and Mamoru and the foundation of one of the most enjoyable BST (belligerent sexual tension) relationships in all of fandom.

As the first “Dub Usagi” and “Dub Mamoru” (as opposed to DiC’s Serena and Darien), both Stephanie Sheh and Robbie Daymond are admittedly reminiscent of their English dub predecessors while still putting their own spin on the characters. No, they don’t sound exactly like the previous English voice actors, nor the Japanese seiyuu who originated the roles. And they don’t try.

What matters most here is not that they sound convincingly like any of the people who have previously inhabited these characters, but that they sound like the characters themselves. Personally, I totally buy Sheh as Usagi and Daymond as Mamoru. If I can watch the scene and I’m not distracted by the voice work, mission accomplished. It seems we have a brand new Usagi and Mamoru, and if the two episodes I’ve already seen are any indication, they’re going to deliver a whole new -- and quite welcome --
