That game wins, hands down.
It was the last bit of greatness to the original series.
Now, i'm not going to down talk the "The Legend of Spyro" series. It's a pretty decent series of it's own. I like it as it's own separate series. But, if you compare it to the original, it just won't match the greatness.
The originals were: open world exploration, fun mini-game filled, bright colorful scenery, with a good story, collectibles to get, and decent boss battles.
The Legend of Spyro is: Dark, Edgy, and Nothing but Fighting. Transformed into an RPG basically with the ability upgrade mechanics. It is NOT what the TRUE Spyro was all about. I mean, the concept alone is pretty decent. But not when you give it to Spyro!
