I think it its true. I don't think Sam could have ever sold his soul for Dean - he would have tried to find another way to save him and Dean would probably die.

Of course Sam would have sold his soul for Dean, in the beginning. I think it's around episode 1x05 that Sam says: 'You're my brother, and I would die for you.'
But I think now that he saw how much it hurt Dean that their father gave his life for him he wouldn't.
Sam is all Dean's got. However, Sam can just as easily go back to school.

Katy.... Yeah I agree - He has something else besides hunting and family - Dean has just those two things - he doesn't have anything to return to because hunting (and family) is all he knows. Poor Dean. I love him so much!!!

I think it's true dat dean needs Sam more than the opposite coz Dean doesn't really have much friends and he doesn't have anyone to rely on except Sam but on the other hand Sam has loads of friends from college and can rely on them including Dean!

I think Dean needs Sam more than Sam needs him coz i'd imagine taking care of someone your whole life then loosing them would make you feel guilty, like you'd let them down and would be very difficult to adjust to and for Dean looking after Sam gives him a purpose, he thinks it's the only thing he's supposed to do, the only thing worth while about himself.
Where as if Sam lost Dean although he'd be devastated it would let him become more independant and become tougher.

I used to think that Dean needed Sam more but now I don't think so anymore. After Dean's death and the way Sam went off the deep end, I think they need each equally. Dean needs Sam because he's the only family he has, while Sam needs Dean to keep him grounded. Without Dean, Sam loses sight of his own humanity, he shuts himself off from those who care about him. He becomes too independent and ruthless and he doesn't care about himself as much. I think that's why he started using his powers. He was willing to take the risk because he didn't care anymore.

No, They both need each other, but especially Sam needs Dean. I agree with Fanfly, Sam had nothing to lose any more and that's why he started to develope his powers. Sam's absolutely lost without Dean.

Sam's more independent, so I say yes, but only with great hesitation. Sam is as desperate to have a real family as Dean is, he just has trouble admitting it. (On that one point, I think Dean is actually more in touch with his feelings.)

Sam's independent, I think he knows what he'd do if he wasn't a hunter, whereas Dean never had a life outside of hunting. I think he'd be lost without him, Sam gives him a purpose.

It's obvious, and tbh it's true for most families in reality. They're almost all each other has. While Dean has in particular tied up his sense of worth in his relationships with others, Sam seems to need Dean to stay grounded.
