Welcome to Julie’s Diary! Every week during the season,
showrunner Julie Plec will add an entry to her diary. From answering burning questions to giving behind-the-scenes stories and more, this is a place for fans to hear directly from Plec about the episode they just watched.
Thursday’s episode, “Best Served Cold,” was written by my partner in crime, the ever-clever Caroline Dries, and directed by Darren Genet (who is also one of the show’s much-loved cinematographers). It’s one of my favorites of the season because all the seeds we’ve been planting are really starting to sprout. When Nina [Dobrev] decided to leave the show at the end of last season, we lost a central element of the series: the love triangle. In Lily and Julian, we built a terrific substitution: a hate triangle. Anger at their mother and rage against Julian have really brought Stefan and Damon together, and disagreements about how to manage this pair of enemies will also be the thing that threatens to drive the brothers apart. It contains not one, but two of my favorite scenes of the season.
There was a mix-up with Beau’s sword on the day he was supposed to rehearse the sword fight, so he watched a YouTube video the night before and taught himself. Todd Lasance (Julian) knows how to sword fight. Watch next week for an actual duel.
Ian [Somerhalder] actually made that no-look pool shot on his first attempt during one of his longest monologues of the season.
Caroline said that writing this episode felt so familiar since the conflict was season one Damon and Stefan at each other’s throats but loving each other at the end of the day. It’s the heartbeat of the show and she said the story really resonated with the crew that had been there since the beginning.
My Favorite Scene, Part 1: Alaric says goodbye to (Faux) Jo. I texted Matt Davis after I first saw this scene to tell him how powerful his acting was. He responded that it was in fact the least amount of actual acting he’s done. I think he and Jodi Lynn O’Keefe were both glad to have some beautiful closure for their tragic love story, and you can feel their honest connection in the goodbye.
My Favorite Scene, Part 2: I love the scene where Stefan tells Damon he could have been a father. For vampires, the inability to procreate means one very significant part of life’s journey is not an option for them. The loss of what could have been, coupled by Damon’s instant compassion really made this brother scene a special one. I loved hearing them talk about what life could have been like if they could have had children.
Speaking of children and vampires who can’t procreate, WTF is happening with Caroline Forbes??? Tune in next week for a full explanation from me.
