In a horror game, the enemies are what make some, if not all, of the horror. They are a major threat, relentlessly hunting Ты down, and Ты must defend yourself, hide, или run away, depending on the situation. These enemies, if done correctly, can be some of the scariest parts of any game and can even become one of the best parts of сказал(-а) game… And then there are times when the enemies are one of the worst parts of the game and just look dumb. I’ve seen few enemies in games that aren’t scary, but when I do find them, oh boy, do I find them. These enemies need to be not threatening in the slightest, have a pretty dumb looking design, and, obviously, not be scary, in a horror game. Keep in mind, however, that what I consider not scary, may be different from what Ты think isn’t, so please do remember that horror varies from person to person and that all of this is just my opinion. And when something takes Ты out of the horror, that is not good. So naturally, let’s look at these enemies and see which ones are as scary as pop tarts… That’s a Silent холм, хилл Revelations joke for those with common sense not to watch that film.
#10: Manpigs from Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs
To be fair, these enemies can be freaky. They have the potential to be. But that’s all it is. Potential. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, being the sequel to one of the scariest and most beloved horror games of the past decade, Amnesia: The Dark Descent, it had a lot to live up to from the last one. So naturally, it didn’t meet much expectations. Sure, the game is fine and can be scary, but there are moments that suck Ты out of it. The Manpigs are one such thing. They may be scary to some, with their appearances, but that’s about it. They aren’t challenging, they aren’t threatening, and really are only a danger if Ты don’t know what Ты are doing. Their easy to outrun, and without the Sanity Effects from the last game, they completely lose the fear that the enemies in the last game had. Not to mention, the enemies in the last game were just much еще creative and terrifying. Here… Not so much. They look like Piggsy from Manhunt, but without any of the creative use of scares with it, so they just come off as silly looking and kind of dumb. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, a great, but easily flawed, sequel that is fine on it’s own merits. But the Manpigs are just silly, I’m sorry, they just aren’t scary. Maybe SOMA has better enemy designs. I wouldn’t know, I haven’t played SOMA yet.
#9: The Taken from Alan Wake
I’ve gone on about how much I enjoy Alan Wake as a Показать but not as much as a game and my opinion of that still hasn’t changed. And I still find The Taken to be some of the most bland and uninteresting monsters in a horror game. I mean, sure, they do have some creative ideas to it, hiding in the light to avoid enemies, and using the light as a way to fight off the enemies, that’s pretty cool. But design-wise, they just look uninspired and bland to me. They're just people, sometimes the same looking ones, with a black smoke around them. They come in, usually, three groups. The same dull ones that rush at you, the big and heavy ones, and the insanely fast ones that can go die in a hole. They always rush at Ты in groups, taking away the fear, and they honestly get tiring to fight after a while. It got to a point where I didn’t feel threatened by my pursuers. I felt like I was trying to run away from an enemy in an RPG because my health was low and I didn’t want to risk dying in battle. And the slow-mo that occurs every single time an enemy rushes at Ты just made me annoyed by them even more. I’m sorry, Alan Wake, I tried to like your game. But the Taken just made it not that possible. I haven’t even played American Dream and I’m honestly еще afraid to play it than I was of the enemies in this game.
#8: Molded from Resident Evil VII
I was tempted to put other Resident Evil enemies on this list, especially some from other games, but then I forgot about the Molded… And that’s the problem. I forgot about them. The Molded is actually the worst part of Resident Evil VII. When it came to the scary aspects of this game, it’s clear that all the effort went into the family, and it works well. I Любовь Lucas’ crazy death traps, I Любовь Marguerite’s obsession with bugs, I Любовь the disturbing backstory of the old woman, and I can never get enough of Jack’s cheesiness. He makes this game, hands down. But the Molded… Eh. Yeah, I honestly think this game would have been fine without them. At first, they're okay, but after a while, they come in so much packs, they honestly aren’t that scary anymore. Why are the zombies in the Resident Evil Remake, a concept that was so overused, even at the time that game came out, work so well, and the Molded don’t? Probably because the Zombie’s didn’t come in packs, thus forcing the developers to make them weaker, and thus making Ты feel a little overpowered, making them strong enough to be threatening, but just weak enough to where Ты could kill them, или even one shot them if you’re lucky. The Molded didn’t have that. They are either bullet sponges или are wet тост that can be taken out in a second. And the crawling ones and fat bloated ones aren’t any better. It’s The Taken all over again, just еще forgettable. Honestly, the crawling Molded just make me beg for a Licker from RE2 right now. I guess not every game can be perfect… The Molded prove that.
#7: Mimics from Prey
Does Prey count as a horror game? Screw it, it does now. With that out of the way, Mimics suck. They sucked in Kid Icarus: Uprising, they sucked in Dark Souls, and here, while not as annoying, they still suck. And I think the Dark Soul Mimics are even scarier than Prey’s. Okay, so, already, Mimics look kind of stupid, if Ты ask me. They just look like black Headcrabs. Nothing too original. Now, the fact that they can turn into any object after turning a corner is actually pretty interesting. Seeing that they can disappear in a секунда and can be anywhere is honestly terrifying. Also, on the topic of looking like Headcrabs, they украл, палантин this from the ability of the High Priestess in Jojo, so screw Ты Prey. Seriously, though, this idea could have been amazing… If used well. Sadly, what this results in is either just ignoring all of the enemies and moving on, or, what you’d most likely do, just whack everything with your melee weapon to find the Mimic, and then kill it. It gets so boring after a while, that once Ты start to do it, it just becomes секунда nature and the Mimics start to overstay their welcome a bit. I haven’t played any further in the game at this point, but I can say that the Mimics aren’t giving me much hope. You’d better have something better planned, Prey, because these Mimics aren’t satisfying me enough.
#6: Carcass from Cry of Fear
In my last Corner of Horror, I mentioned that I didn’t like the Дизайн of Carcass, and I can now safely say that Carcass is as scary as a rotten piece of meat… Actually, the rotten meat is probably еще scary, but Ты get the point, Carcass is stupid and I don’t find him scary at all. I get it, he is a physical representation of Simon’s (Spoiler) and how he feels (Spoiler) After (Spoiler, Spoiler, Spoiler), but I still think they could have done something a little less…. Silly looking. I get it, he says he’s just a piece of meat in a chair… But this is just the literal point of it. It’s just a carcass… in a chair… floating in the sky… as he gurgles… I’m pausing a lot on this one. I don’t know why. The fight also doesn’t help make him any scarier, because for a creature with no limbs, или organs from where I’m looking, he’s pretty tough. I know Ты can just leave the fight, but nah, I want the good ending. But this mean, for those who do want to fight him, they will most likely get еще annoyed than scared, so it doesn’t really help make this already unscary enemy less scary. I can at least appreciate the effort that went into trying to make something out of this, and I get that this isn’t a big budget game, или hell, technically isn’t even a game, it’s a mod (Which ruins the point of this article), but still. Carcass: Not scary. I’ve seen scary slabs of meat from Super Meat Boy, really.
(Notice: Because I couldn’t get much Обои from the game to download onto my bulky and shitty computer, I borrowed some fanart from Deviantart. So, have some fanart by FuzGuy433)
#5: Springtrap from Five Night’s at Freddy’s 3
Oh boy, I was hoping not to tread down this path again. I’ve stated before that I do not like the Five Nights at Freddy’s games, and my opinion has not really changed all that much. I can at least respect it for trying something new, however. And then 3 came along and just pissed all over it. If I didn’t enjoy the first two games, the third one is the game that just made me avoid the series for a long while. And Springtrap is the main reason why. Say what Ты want about the jump scares in the Назад two games, at least they only came as a penalty, and most of the scares were trying to stay alive as the animatronics watched you. Here, all of the jumpscares come out of nowhere, as Springtrap is just… somewhere else. He could be in the back, in the vents, out the window, at the bar having a drink, but no matter what, him just standing there is not scary. He just stands around and does nothing while most of the danger is trying to deal with the jumpscares of the phantom animatronics messing with your equipments. And of course, even as a jumpscare, Springtrap sucks. I can at least praise the еще fluent Анимация in his movements, but his jumpscare… Isn’t even a jumpscare. It’s еще like a shuffle scare… That’s a worse, I think. He just walks over to Ты and makes a noise. It’s not scary for those who enjoy subtle horror and it’s not shocking enough for those who get the thrill from jumpscares. It’s just embarrassing. Hell, Springtrap even shuffles towards Ты all embarrassed like he’s trying to ask Ты on a дата или something. It’s pathetic.
#4: Amazonian ящерица Women from Escape from Bug Island
… Ты thought I was joking? No, there is actually, on this planet earth, right now, a game, for the Nintendo Wii, no less, that has such a thing as Amazonian ящерица Women. I am honestly trying to find words to describe these enemies. I mean, with a game titled Escape from Bug Island, with bad voice acting, story telling, and just an в общем и целом, общая dumb idea from the start, not much was expected from this game. But this… This is on a whole new levels of dumb. I’m honestly baffled and speechless about this one. Okay, so, of course, they are ящерица Women, and they are clearly shown to Ты after Ты read about them, completely unsubtle, of course, and they just come at Ты and attack you. I think they don’t like having sand thrown at them. I’m sorry, I’m trying my hardest to describe these enemies, but… What еще can I say. How can I be scared of something as dumb as, in case Ты missed it, Amazonian… Lizard… Women!? Honestly, if Ты can’t see the problem here by this point, I don’t know what else to say. And yes, these Обои with Болталка logos in the corners are the only Обои I could find of these enemies, so sorry.
#3: The Walkers from The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
I won’t lie, I have not seen much of the Walking Dead. I’ve seen a couple of the season one episodes, clips of the other seasons, and upon hearing some reviews, I am not missing much. I’m еще interested in the games… The Telltale games… Yes, even the later ones… Because they’re certainly better than the train wreck that is Survival Instincts. Survival Instincts is easily one of the worst games I’ve ever played. It demands that Ты play this game with friends, или Ты aren’t going to have any fun with it. Because swinging a hammer at a Walker’s crotch for several минуты just begs to have Друзья watch. The Walkers in this game are some of the most idiotic and broken enemies in a horror game (And I am counting this as a horror game… Some reasons being еще obvious than others). They stumble around, they barely function as beings, living или dead, and they can range from taking a few hits to hundreds. Fighting them really depends on the sense of humor Ты and your Друзья have. They can either be tedious as hell или one of the better parts of this mess. They honestly make the Walkers from the Telltale games look like Crimson Heads in comparison. At least those coming near your group had consequences. The only consequence here is that I spent thirty dollars on this game.
#2: Pyramid Head from Silent холм, хилл 2
This is honestly one of the еще tragic choices for this list, and Ты all probably know why. I have discussed many times before on the Corner for Horror that Pyramid Head belongs in Silent холм, хилл 2 and only Silent холм, хилл 2. Not the movies, или other games. This is because Pyramid Head is (Spoilers for Silent холм, хилл 2) A part of James’ psyche, a physical representation of the suffering he deals with and the guilt he has for killing his wife and his want for punishment. It is a major part of his character and the main reason Pyramid Head chased him throughout the game. Everyone loved Pyramid Head for this reason, for the character it built for James. Konami and Hollywood, however, didn’t see this. They just saw their poster character for other projects and made him a returning character, completely sucking out any purpose he originally had and completely leaving him as a husk of his former self. Watching Pyramid Head be put into Silent холм, хилл Фильмы and later games is the equivalent of watching a loved one die. It’s tragic and no one is enjoying themselves. Pyramid Head did not deserve this kind of treatment. He should have never been taken out of Silent холм, хилл 2, and now, he is just seen as a hulking killer. Give Resident Evil some credit, Nemesis may have been the most iconic monster in the franchise, but when they killed him off, he fucking stayed dead, and never brought him back (Except in the movie, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, but that movie screwed up everything, not just Nemesis).
#1: Augers from Night Trap
I thought long and hard about what makes some of these monsters scary and what makes them… Not, of course. So, why did I pick the Augers for the number one spot. What makes these ninjas with gardening tools not scary… Aside from how I just described them. Because, at least with the other enemies, they can be scary. I can see how some people can find the Pigmen, The Taken, Mimics, Springtrap, and Carcass scary. Hell, at first, Mimics and Pyramid Head were scary. The Walkers, in other media, are scary. And yes, even the Amazonian ящерица Women can be scary, if done… in any other way than the final outcome. The Augers… Ты can’t make these guys scary. They are just guys, wearing all black, that stumble around the house. Hell, at least the other enemies were somewhat of a threat. In Night Trap, the Augers mess up, by simply stepping on obvious traps, или on things that, while not obvious, make no sense to step on. Augers will gladly step on a weight scale, thus causing themselves to be shoved into a trap. They are clumsy buffoons, idiots, morons, dimwits, and just в общем и целом, общая not clever, или cleverly made. And to think that these guys were responsible with helping create the ESRB rating. Please, I’ve seen еще violence from Хэллоуин on Atari. At least that one had danger in it. This… What’s the point? Take care.
