Is there such a thing as too many characters?

i'm Письмо a story about mystical creatures, but i think i have too many characters; and im afraid itll be hard for my readers, and maybe even me to keeo track of unusual characters. These are the characters:

2 vampires
1 angel
1 mermaid
3 werewolves
2 elves
1 demon
1 satyr
1 centaur

if Ты think i have too many characters, which
one(s) should i get rid of? (p.s. i need at least one vampire because shes the main character)

It's hard to say. As Iheartdowho said, it depends on who's the main characters in your story. Are these all main characters, или are they just characters that pop up throughout your story.

It also depends on the story itself. Is this a story that would work with that many characters? (For example, the Harry Potter series and The Mortal Instruments series both have hundreds of characters. That set up works and is necessary for the stories. But the Artemmis Fowl and Vampire Diaries only have a handful of characters, and that set up works for those stories.)

Ты also need to be aware of your own ability. If Ты can't, или have a lot of trouble, keeping track of these characters, your readers definitely will as well.

I think it depends on which characters will be the main characters, the ones that aren't too important shouldn't be in it as much but don't make them pointless either

I think that, if Ты think Ты can handle working with that many characters then Ты have a good amount. I've worked with еще than that before.

As long as Ты keep to simple names that people can remember.
Not like my stories where people usually have Japanese names like Ryuu, Hehachi, Sakura, Hiru, Kuroi, E.C.T.

Well I have different names (ex. Aramantha, Desdemona, Jezeball, etc.) but I think that they're so unique that it'd be easy to remember who's who.

in general the way i see it Ты can have as many as Ты can juggle and keep on the path of the plot. but each person has their own take on it if Ты were to go to an editor with a lot of characters his philosophy may be different though.
when they made X-men 2, X2:united the editor told the writers he had too many characters and they had to cut a lot.
So basically my Совет is do what Ты can handle cut parts later if Ты feel there is too many

They say readers like to identify with specific characters. A story typically has one "star" for them to identify with and that is the character who has the most at stake in the story. I think Фильмы and TV shows can get away with moving around more. It's their nature to jump around between characters.
But there's no rule that says Ты can't.

No, way. while not all of your character will have a leading roll, they will all be importent. Ты can have еще than one main character but remember, stay on one plot. If there is something going on with all of them, it can get confusing unless they all tie in togeather.
