There's a lot of stereotype surrounding creative Письмо courses. The biggest one being "they stifle your creativity! They just tell Ты what to write!" And I just wanted to say: all that is is stereotype. There's hardly any truth to it at all. Maybe some teachers do that, but I don't think it's right to base something like that on such a small percent.
I took two creative Письмо courses in college (with two separate teachers). Never once was I told what to write. I was дана prompts ("write about your most vivid memory," "write about the funniest thing Ты can think of") occasionally, but they usually just gave us free reign over whatever genre we were covering. I was never told I sucked, или I needed to write about something else, I was simply дана constructive criticism ("your character had a beautiful line there, but your detail of her surroundings were a little lacking. Try using stronger words like...")
It helped me a lot, both in my fiction writing, my "educational" writing, and in looking back and my own work. It made me aware of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and gave me helpful ideas on how to strengthen those weaknesses. Those were easily the best two classes I have taken yet.
