It was a golden summer evening. The last rays of the setting sun reflected off the surface of the water whilst reeds swayed lazily at the banks of the pond. I closed my eyes, feeling content for a moment.
The old jetty creaked as a small boy walked along it, stopping Далее to me. He sat down with a thud, and turned, grinning, to face me.
“Not long now,” Jacob сказал(-а) happily, “another tester.”
I smiled in return. The excitement of summer had worn off quickly for us, and our small town didn’t offer much in the way of entertainment for children of our age. So, we spent our days playing mindlessly and our nights doing this. We called it a test, but I was never quite sure what we were testing, and, if I’m honest, I still don’t know now. Perhaps it was our skills, или maybe we were trying to find out who was ‘quality’ enough to Присоединиться our group.
Either way, the goal was to catch one of the small, чирок tadpoles swimming in the pond. Sometimes, the winner was able to choose the Далее day’s activities, but usually the only prize was the ability to gloat for the rest of the evening.
We were nine, we were bored. Ты can’t blame us.
“This is gonna be great!” Jacob enthused as he lay back on the deck, “especially with the new kid.”
The novelty of the ‘tadpole test’ (as we had, so creatively, named it) had worn off in the past few weeks. It had become clearer recently who actually had the skills and who didn’t- we were getting bored.
That was all due to change tonight, however, as a new family had moved into our town two weeks ago. The Hamilton family (I remember being shocked at how posh the name sounded!) were ex-Californians, and we had recently persuaded their eight год old daughter to come out and play tonight.
“Wait,” Jacob held up his hand for silence (though I hadn’t been speaking in the first place) and sprang to his feet, “I think I can hear people!” He ran to the end of the deck, making it dip slightly, where it met solid ground again, and looked around the sides of the trees. I saw him grin, and run out of my sight.
“Hold on, Jacob, we’re almost there!” I heard Brandon say, his tone filled with annoyance. After a few еще moments, Jacob ran back onto the deck, but this time he was followed by seven others.
First came Carly, then Brandon (still looking slightly annoyed, I noticed), then Jode and James, followed by Kurt and Marcus. Finally, at the very back of the group, Samantha Hamilton stood looking unsure and tentative.
Jacob pointed at her, “Samantha?”
Samantha nodded, but I made a point to nudge Jacob and remind him it was rude to point. He continued anyway.
“I’m Jacob, and this is Elise. That’s Brandon, and...and Carly, but Ты probably know them by now anyway...”
She smiled (such a charming little smile), and replied politely.
“Pleasure.”
I remember thinking how odd it was that I could find out so much about her from that one exchange. She was exotic, but down to earth, and certainly knew how to hold herself. What’s more, her accent was so smooth and polished; I couldn’t help but feel uneasy at the contrast between her accent and my northern one. I was jealous- I won’t lie about that.
“Right,” I spoke up after a moment,” Shall we get started?”
The group nodded, and Jode nudged Samantha towards the edge of the pond. I grew еще envious as I watched her walk. She was tanned, she was blonde and she was tall for her age. She was ‘perfect’.
I had always been a leader, of sorts, for the group, but now all eyes were on her. The envy was a stabbing pain in my chest now, and I was ashamed. I realise now that it was an overreaction, but all things seem large to a child’s mind.
But what happened Далее surprised even me.
As Samantha knelt down Далее to the pond, and leaned over it to take the ‘test’, I moved out of her way. In doing so, however, I nudged her with my foot. It was only a slight nudge- I certainly wouldn’t have done anything if it had happened to me.
But Samantha wasn’t me, and it did have an effect. I didn’t know this; in fact, it was only the shocked cries of “Elise!” that alerted me to the fact that there had been an effect at all.
Samantha had fallen forward, face first, into the pond. She was currently flailing wildly, eyes shut tight and covered in mud.
“An accident!” I responded shrilly, in a vain attempt to convince my peers, или perhaps myself, of my innocence. Samantha was being helped out of the pond by now, but her gaze was one of hurt and betrayal. That hurt me the most.
The others were attempting to clean her off, but they still managed to send me dagger-like glares. I was dumbstruck- there was nothing I could say to make this situation better.
“Sorry...” I murmured under my breath, too cowardly to say it any louder. No-one noticed. I thought about going home, but felt as if I should stay, even if I would only hang around on the fringes awkwardly.
Samantha passed the ‘test’ on her секунда try. There was a lot of cheering and hugs, but by now everyone was pretending not to notice me. When I tried to clap for the others, they just glared at me. During my test, I thought I felt someone nudge me lightly, but, like I say, it wouldn’t have affected me anyway.
I Остаться в живых the position I held in the group after that night. I was a leader no more. I couldn’t be trusted. Even Jacob didn’t look at me in the same way anymore. But Samantha- tall, tanned, blonde Samantha- she had it all.
As far as I know, I am the first person to ever, well and truly, fail the test.
And that hurts.

I feel like you're breaking me,
I feel like Ты don't even care.
I feel like Ты want to break this friendship.
I feel like Ты rather have him than someone who can be a true bestfriend.
I feel like killing myself,
I feel like cutting myself, Is that what Ты want from me?
I feel like i'm always angry,
I feel like you're always happy.
I feel like giving up,
I feel like saying fuck this friendship,
I feel like saying fuck friends.
I feel like i had your back when Ты needed it.
I feel like crying, Just to make Ты happy cause that's what Ты like right..?
I feel like Ты Любовь seeing me in pain.
I feel like saying goodbye...!
I feel like Ты don't even care.

"ALRIGHT! Class, take your seats. Science is about to begin." сказал(-а) Mrs.Labansky. She was THE strictest teacher in the district. "I hate...this, so much." I put my head on a textbook. "Cheer up, buddy." Ahh. Meghan, she was my best friend since kindergarten. After 10 секунды of science class started, I was dreaming my worst nightmare.
*** DREAM ***
"Help somebody!" I screamed. I was in space! I was so afraid of heights that I cried. Then all of a sudden, I heard a thud. *THUD* I woke up!
*** DREAM OVER ***
"Miss Quetzal! Tell me what the answer is to this problem!" she said. I thought about saying, "I don't know." But then it hit me! Literally! Something hit my head and I fell to the floor!
