Not only was he the only one with a PhD (which by itself doesn't necessarily make him the best), he's the only one who was offered multiple jobs AND he was the one selected to hold down the fort while Brennan was away. The fact that he helped to bring her back when Wendell actually considered the possibility that she was guilty is also a contributing factor...but Wendell is SO darn cute that I find it easy to forgive him.
