Maybe J.J. attempted suicide as a teen? When she was struggling to make it into college (North Mammon)? idk its just all I can come up with for now.

I also think it will be a brother or sister, or perhaps a best friend who committed suicide and JJ felt guilty because she thinks she could stopped it if she had paid attention to the signals, and this case brings back all those feelings.
