Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
How To Wear Black Lipstick In The Summer Like Demi Lovato
Straight from her makeup artist Jill Powell.
Between Demi Lovato and Rihanna, it’s clear that the summer goth look is (still!) goin’ strong. Lately, these two have been vamping up their beachy ensembles with black lipstick, and TBH, we were dying (heh) to try this look for ourselves. So, we hit up Demi’s longtime makeup artist Jill Powell to give us all the info on how to get that foolproof, smudgeproof and (most importantly) sweatproof black pout because, hi, it ain’t easy wearing a dark lip in scorching heat. Check out her tips below, and we swear you’ll be a pro in
You want the color to be strong and make a statement. When deciding what texture and finish to choose for yourself, I suggest these guidelines:
If you like your skin to be glowing and have a dewy finish, then go for a matte black lipstick to contrast your skin.
If you prefer your skin to have a more matte, powdery finish, then you may want to opt for a glossy or semi-glossy texture on the lips.
Two of my favorites are Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Slayer and Lime Crime Velveteen Matte Lipstick in Black Velvet.
As with any lipstick application, you should exfoliate and hydrate your lips so that the lipstick goes on smooth and your lips look plump and hydrated. My go-to products are Bite Beauty Lip Scrub and Lip Mask.
For extra exfoliation, I like to use a soft bristled tooth brush with the scrub to gently remove dead skin by lightly brushing back and forth across the lips.
Then, follow up with a layer of the lip mask or any lip conditioner to hydrate and soften the lips.
Be sure to remove any excess lip conditioner after it has soaked in before starting your lipstick application. If your lips have too much balm on them, then the lipstick won’t stay put. You can also use a lip primer to help the lipstick stay put throughout the day. I love using Too Faced Lip Insurance Primer.

Using a sponge, powder the entire mouth area so that the skintone looks even and the lip line is nice and clean.
Line your lips with a sharpened black lipliner (or eyeliner) starting with the Cupid’s bow. I like to start at the top of one peak and head toward the center of the top lip, then repeat for the other peak, almost making an “X” motion. (Avoid using a kohl pencil as this will smudge and not give you a lasting look.)
Once your lips are lined, fill in your lips with your favorite black lipstick. Then, I use a lip brush to get all the way to the edges and corners, blending the color into the liner and into the lips.
If you want a long lasting matte finish, use a translucent powder to set the lips by tapping the powder on top of the lips with a small fluffy brush. If you don’t want a matte lip but still want it to last all day, you can always set your lipstick with translucent powder. Then, add another layer of your semi-glossy lipstick on top to give you the finish you want.
If needed, use a small flat synthetic concealer brush with a tiny bit of your concealer to clean the edges up and make them sharp and precise.
For a fun variation, you can always add a pop of color to the center of your bottom lip. I love using a berry or wine color here to add some interesting dimension.
Finally, keep the rest of your makeup look simple.
Since black lips are such a statement in itself, I suggest keeping the skin and complexion very clean. Use foundation or powder to even out your skintone, then sweep a soft, toned blush onto the cheeks. I also love pairing black lips with simple mascara and maybe a light shimmer on the lids. If you prefer, eyeliner can also be worn, but again, try to keep it simple and classic–this way your features aren’t competing for attention, and your look will come off more chic.

With opaque-colored lipsticks, make sure you apply a generous coating of lipstick so that the color is strong and even.
To make your lips look bigger: when lining the top lip, start at the corner of your mouth and head upward toward your Cupid’s bow. The natural motion will help you to make a more rounded line, thus adding volume to your lips making them appear larger.
For longer wear, use a waterproof liner to line your lips, then fill in the entire lip with the waterproof liner before applying lipstick.
