Such a sad tale. I wonder how many youngings think that the Disney happy ending is the true ending. That is sad in itself.

it's been so long since I last read Andersen I like all his tales but my favourite is the travelling companion, it is really really good...!

i don't like how most of his books always end up sad. i said MOST. but it's still the truth: life isn't full of happy endidngs, sometimes it's full of depressing beginnings.

when I was like 6 years old, I was so afraid of the story, but inspite of that I just had to keep on reading it again and again^^

She (the mermaid) love the Prince so much that in the end she loved him more than life itself.

I also really love The Snow Queen but The Steadfast Tin Soldier is such a beautiful and well-crafted story that I had to choose it.

when i think Hans Christian Andersan i think of this fine tale.

I'm not sure anymore how the little mermaid ended, I should read it again..

I cry every time I read the little match girl.

One of my very favorites. I cry ever time I read it.

It's a great stroy of how a tiny girl faces her giants and overcomes her obsticles.

love the fairytale, also love the disney film adaption. I also like the Ugly Duckling, The Princess and the Pea and the Emperors New Clothes. :)

Even though its really sad...

This has been my favorite fairy tale for as long as i can remember.

When I was little I used to cry everytime I read The Little Mermaid and I prefered the Disney version. But I now I like the real version much more. The Little Match Girl is so sad. But I'm glad that the little girl didn't suffer or was in pain when she died (I'm a sap).

Terrifying as a young child, but I always loved it anyway! Love all of the aforementioned stories...so hard to choose! ;)

I always thought that was a funny story that taught a good lesson.

So many favorites....I grew up on his fairy tales. And the real ones too, not the happy Disney versions.

It is one of the few H.C Andersen stories that ends happy.

I like The Little Mermaid, it is sad, thats probably why I like the Disney versions of fairytales. But I still find it intriguing to know where they came from.

Little Match Girl is SO sad. I was only four when I read that.
