I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Game of Thrones S4 total viewership challenging The Sopranos (and The Walking Dead) - WinterIsComing.net - News and rumors about HBO's Game of Thrones
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Game of Thrones S4 total viewership challenging The Sopranos (and The Walking Dead)
HBO has recently updated the total viewership number, The Hollywood Reporter … reports. A month ago, an average of 17.8 million people saw each episode across all the different platforms. Today, the number stands at 18 million! Good job,
. The show is thus on a good way to break the absolute record set by
. We were under the impression that the record stood at 14.4, but apparently the official number with all the repeats is 18.2 million viewers, set by the fourth of the six seasons of this HBO hit show. Good to know what to aim at!
THR’s article draws some more comparisons. Although they themselves admit that it is next to impossible to fairly and reliably compare HBO numbers to that of other cables (or networks), they note that according to the live-plus-7 metric, GoT is just behind
airing on the free AMC cable channel with 18.4 million viewers, and beating most of the
In other news, here are some more detailed numbers for the record-breaking episodes this season. Three of them hold the all-time series high of 7.2 million viewers during the first airing, after the reasonable rounding up to the first decimal. More precisely, though, the numbers stand as follows: episode 405 –  7.155 million, episode 407 – 7.195 million, and episode 408 – 7.166 million.

Rarely do we, as book readers, have a role we are so conflicted about loving. Oberyn Martell, the Red Viper of Dorne, was near and dear to the hearts of many ASoIaF …

GOT on HBO: 18 million with a 30 million homes reach.
WD on AMC: 18.4 million with nearly 100 million homes reach.
Additionally, although there’s no way to quantify this accurately, GoT is still the most pirated show online by a fair margin. So it stands to reason that GoT is watched by far more people (legally + illegally) than The Walking Dead.
Damn, I’m happy for the show-the more successful they are the bigger their budgets for future filming, not to mention having more leeway to do longer episodes if need be.
Also those numbers don’t even take into account DVD sales and Itunes that really help make it a cash cow.
Now I’m wondering if/when GOT might eclipse Sopranos and even Walking Dead in the numbers.
Although you do have to factor in a lot of repeat airings and the availability of HBO Go, as well. It’s still damn impressive, but as the article said, it’s hard to compare HBO to other networks for viewing numbers. They each have advantages and disadvantages that the other lacks, so figuring out how much of a handicap to give and who to give it to isn’t easy.
On that note, The Sopranos record was set before a change in the way Nielsen calculated ratings, which is going to make that a difficult comparison as well. I
one of the things that was changed was something along the lines of, previously, combining the viewership numbers across all HBO-owned channels when tallying the total for a certain time block, even if the channel in question was playing Sopranos.
That may not be entirely accurate as my memory on the subject is a bit hazy, but regardless, the record for The Sopranos was arrived at using a different methodology than the Thrones numbers, so breaking it is going to be largely symbolic. There’s no way to tell when the actual number of eyes on each episode tips in favor of GoT. It’s a bit like comparing a record in miles to a record in kilometers without knowing how to convert between the two.
Also, I wouldn’t mind my lack of ability to edit posts on mobile so much if I knew how to switch to desktop, but that button seems to have been removed and I don’t know where there is a replacement or if one even exists.
