‘The Walking Dead’ Stars Explain The Premiere’s Most Emotional Scene
Melissa McBride and Sonequa Martin-Green go behind the tear-jerking reunion scene.
The fifth season premiere “The Walking Dead” may have been full of intense action, terrifying scares and lots and lots of the undead — but for us, the biggest moment was one full of emotion.
Spoilers for “The Walking Dead” beyond this point.
After the battle of Terminus, the group finally, finally reunited on the train tracks outside of Terminus. And two of the biggest moments were reserved for Carol (Melissa McBride) and Daryl (Norman Reedus), and Tyreese (Chad Coleman) and Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green).
Carol,” McBride told MTV News when we visited the show’s set earlier this year. “When I read the scripts, I get emotional at what she’s evolved to, or what she has to find within herself, the courage within herself to do what she has to do.
“I get emotional for her, because I love this character. I’m proud of her. At the same time, I know how difficult these things are for her. We were talking about the heart, I know she loves these people and will do anything to protect them.”
And off camera, McBride gave us a first-hand display of what it’s like to play an emotional scene with Norman Reedus. Stating that he’s, “like a puppy,” McBride physically tackled us, showing how Reedus – in multiple takes – knocked her to the ground, before doing the more restrained take you see on screen.
As for Martin-Green, her character Sasha has a pretty external reaction to the post-Terminus reunions.
“It was like a little slice of heaven, because Sasha was ready to be alone, rather than go to Terminus and face the fact that her brother could be dead,” Martin-Green said. “Being reunited with him, she didn’t realize just how dependent she was on him, until he was gone. And she was just prepared, she didn’t know how she was going to do that.
“So reuniting with him just opened up the jar of hope for her again. Because Sasha is always in this process of entertaining hope and then getting crushed for it. That’s just one of those moments when, maybe she can have everything. She has her man, she has her brother, maybe everything will be okay.”
