'Walking Dead': Is Enid a Remixed Version of Sophia?

While many diehards believe the teenager is a member of the Wolves — the killers who savaged their way through the community and who each have a bloody W carved into their foreheads —

has another theory: She's a remixed version of Carol's daughter, Sophia.

As fans of the AMC zombie drama will recall, Madison Lintz's Sophia was killed during the season two midseason finale in an episode written by current

showrunner Scott M. Gimple. The girl went missing at the start of season two, with the group's search for her taking up a ton of real estate before she was revealed to have been turned into a walker and held inside Hershel's barn before Rick had to shockingly put her down.

The events of that episode marked a major departure from Robert Kirkman's comic book series in which Sophia is still very much alive. Following Carol's suicide in the comic series on which the AMC drama is based, Sophia winds up being taken in and raised by Glenn and Maggie — and has repressed memories of her mother. In the current comics arc, Sophia becomes a force to be reckoned with and a close confidant to Carl.

On the AMC series, Enid forms a connection with Carl (Chandler Riggs) — which sets off her Alexandria boyfriend Ron (Austin Abrams) and fuels a clash with Rick's son — before bailing from the community and telling Carl to "Just Survive Somehow." Flashbacks also reveal that Enid watched as both of her parents were attacked by the undead and, as she tells Glenn, she was "orphaned by walkers."

Despite her objections, Glenn (Steven Yeun) insists that Enid return to Alexandria with him as they bond over both having lost their families in the apocalypse.

posed the Enid/Sophia theory to Gimple following the midseason finale and while he wouldn't confirm or deny it, he did seem to make clear what she

"I can neither confirm nor deny that but I will say we've had a pretty good look at her forehead and that should say something to people," Gimple said with a nod to the Wolves' trademark forehead W. 

It's worth noting that Gimple, a longtime fan of the comics, brings a "remix" approach to the AMC series. Should Enid be a remixed version of Sophia, the timing of her arrival and connection with Glenn could indicate what direction the zombie drama is going. In the comics, Sophia becomes Maggie's lone surviving family member following Glenn's death. The former pizza delivery guy is brutally beaten to death by Negan before Maggie gives birth to Glenn's child.

Given that Glenn told Enid that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) is pregnant, Enid could wind up serving as a key confidant should Glenn die at Negan's hands.

"There are a lot of direct moments from the comic coming up in the second half and panels that we're bringing to life — from very big comic moments to really tiny comic moments," Gimple

after the midseason finale. "Things that are not gigantic and dramatic but just little moments from the comic that all add up to some big moments."

For his part, Yeun said on Talking Dead that Maggie's pregnancy prompted him to go back for Enid after he survived the now infamous dumpster attack. "The looming idea of fatherhood has definitely changed him, especially in the way that he processes how much he wants to maintain his humanity," he said. "He's searching for a place to be able to pass on to his son or daughter and say, 'Listen, your dad tried doing everything he could to maintain the person that he was so we can live in this society we created up until this point. So to go back for Enid and to say that this is for Maggie is part of that."
