Despite Negan, ‘The Walking Dead’ Finale Ratings Are Down From Last Season
has been unpacked about as much as it can be (which is to say, there’s a lot we don’t know, and the writers might not, either), with breakdowns of the entire episode and audio of the last scene, where Negan’s bat Lucille meets… someone. Surely, with all that hype, including executive producer David Alpert calling Negan one of the “greatest villains ever created in TV,” and Andrew Lincoln adding that his introduction is the “greatest entrance ever written,” the ratings for the finale were ridiculous? Well, yes and no.
Compared to every other show on TV, the numbers are great…
Sunday’s episode of the zombie apocalypse drama pulled in an average of 14.2 million viewers and a 6.9 rating in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic.
The season five finale in March 2015 managed a massive 15.8 million viewers and an 8.2 rating, meaning the show was down around 10 percent in viewers and 15 percent in the demo.
14.2 million is the second highest rating for this season (the premiere pulled in 14.6), but it’s lower than what season five pulled in practically every episode. Again, those are ridiculous numbers — last week’s episode was easily the number one cable show on TV, and it was the lowest-rated episode of the season — until they’re compared to what
The fatigue might be real, and the cliffhangers aren’t helping.
Now Watch: 1 Question We Have After The ‘Walking Dead’ Finale: Uh, What Was That?

Good. Thats what all that cutsie shit gets you.
After I watched the finale on Monday I texted my wife and said I was done with it. She gave up a few seasons ago (yes, I married much smarter)
With all the things I keep hearing about Vikings I think it’s gonna be what takes over for the time I’ve spent watching TWD
@CorgiFridayLives if you have Amazon Prime all but the current season are available.
Vikings is da shit! I gave up on TWD at this mid-season bullshit they do. Why do they split the season up like that?
@Paul from the Gump awesome! thanks for the heads up!
Thank Breaking Bad for this I think. At least they gave up on the nonsense practice of offering pre-orders for a whole season, and then halfway through deciding that order was actually for “Season 5: Part 1”. The second half of that was the only television I’ve ever torrented. I too, am not a fan of split seasons.
did Season 5’s finale go up against WrestleMania? People underestimate the popularity of WWE, especially Mania.
good point. sadly, Wrestlemania also had a disappointing ending!
Oddly enough, WM also had a bat wrapped in barbwire that didnt connect
When you start pissing people off that will happen.
Opening Day baseball in a few big markets doesn’t help either.
Was going to suggest WrestleMania cut into that, but apparently WrestleMania 31 was held on the same night as the Season 5 finale.
is it me or is that leather coat look a little too tight?
He reminded me of one of those leather-clad dancers from the Blue Oyster in Police Academy.
Stop all of the fucking crying about “cliffhangers” already. It’s based on a comic book. Practically every issue of the cb is a cliffhanger as well.
That is exactly what the problem is, a TV show and a comic book will never have the same demographics. The writers snd producers need to start understanding that. Of course you will have some crossover because of how much the comic books are didcussed but as a rule comic books tend to have a specific audience and TV has to cater to a much larger crowd. Following the graphic novels too closely, or wuite frankly at all from this point forward will likely kill the show. From day one of season six ALL we heard the nerds talking about was Negan. By the time he showed up I was slready bored with him
Also THAT scene wasn’t a cliffhanger in the book and even if it had been you would have had to wait a month for it to conclude… one of the reasons that scene carried all the weight it did in the comics was because it fully played out in real time..
Hey. Welcome to the internet. I’d be happy to show you around if you like.
I feel that it’s less about the cliffhanger and more about the fact that the entire back half of the season was all about how Negan is coming and he’s such a badass and we got no payoff for that at all still.
wrestlemania and opening day (night) of the baseball season must have had a bit to do with that.
I love this show. Hate the people who watch and cry every damn week.
True if they went by the comic book who the hell would want to watch it cause hell I could just get on internet read the comic and be done with it .I my self love.the show .im a little disappointed in how it’s turning .expecially when negan said get on ur knees and carl look at his dad rick like are u seriously going to get on ur knees for this sorry ass .like u I said we can do anything .but we didnt .thats the only thing that up set me. that to me is like if I pertraied to be able to do anything and will fight for what I have .and I teach my kid to do that .and then for me to bow down is just so wrong .am I right or am I going around this the wrong way ?
