We’re hearing that, by the end of Season 9 of AMC’s hit drama series
, Rick Grimes himself will be walking away. That’s right TWD enthusiasts, Andrew Lincoln will be growling his way through the post-apocalyptic setting for just one more season before calling it quits. And while we won’t be spoiling just how the series’ founding character makes his exit, we do know that fans can only expect to see Lincoln in half-a-dozen episodes of the upcoming season.
Any time a major character from the show shuffles off this mortal coil (or heads to a spin-off series), it’s a big deal, but for the characters who have been there from the beginning like Rick Grimes & Co., their loss is catastrophic. We saw that effect when Chandler Riggs left the show just last season and we’ll likely see an even bigger fan fallout when Lincoln leaves in Season 9. To fill the void in the show’s leading man status, we’re also hearing that AMC has offered substantial compensation to long-running series star Norman Reedus to not only stay on board, but to take over the show’s leading role.
Off-screen drama has been fairly common for
this off-season with star Lauren Cohan, who’s not quite a TWD original but close, making waves across social media by holding out for a better contract. Her case was strengthened by the Season 8 finale, which put her character Maggie in a position of power that ironically mirrored Cohan’s own bargaining position at the negotiating table. Cohan is confirmed to be back for Season 9 of
, though it’ll only be for six episode as well; her ABC pilot
has been ordered to series, keeping her plenty busy. It’s possible that AMC will cut ties with both Lincoln and Cohan this season … or vice versa. Lincoln has been relatively locked down in the eight-plus years of starring on
, and while it’s a lucrative job, it limits the versatile star from taking on other creative challenges. Cohan, too, has been a sought-after talent during the recent TV pilot season and has increasingly high-profile films on deck at this stage in her career.
Don’t worry though, fans; Daryl Dixon is here to stay for the foreseeable future, so there’s no need to riot just yet.
But what do you think? Is it time for these talented actors to spread their wings and move on from
or do you want to see Rick and Maggie stick it out to the bitter end? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!

BUT trying to get Reedus to take over is extremely dumb. They have actively made his character a grunting bore, and now they think they can just make him the lead and it'll make sense? And we will care?
Two major opportunities present themselves:
1) Give the show to JDM. Negan is the main character. We focus on Negan's "rehab" and get his full backstory.
2) Merge TWD and FTWD, and hope like hell it works. Although the only way I see it working is if Madison is still alive and she is the focus of the show. So this option only works if they haven't completely fucked FTWD, which is not looking promising at this point. Prior to the crossover, the merger would have been the best option, but losing Frank Dillane and weird shit going on in season 4 right now means that even a full merger is not looking great right now.
There are other options, like maybe Carol or Michonne taking over the lead, which would also be cool, but they screwed Daryl up. He isn't an option. People no longer shout "if Daryl dies, we riot". That was years ago, AMC. No one wants him in the lead. It wouldn't make sense. They haven't in any way developed his character into a leader, unlike the development of Madison, Carol and Michonne. Give the lead to a woman. Your show is dying anyway. At least give us some good female badassery before your ship totally sinks.
I fully support the Give TWD to JDM option. I would watch the crap out of The Walking Negan. I agree that a full-on F/TWD merger could be tricky, but it could work. Maybe Morgan will serve a purpose after all - lead the FTWD survivors back to TWD. (But if you could kill Naomi along the way, that'd be great.) Plus, I would looove to see Madison make TWD her bitch.
I've heard rumblings of Danai maybe not sticking around for too much longer, either, but I don't believe there have been any legitimate sources on that. But with all the Marvel things going on, I don't think it's totally out of the question.
There are still Daryl fangirls, but they're definitely not as loud as they used to be. (Was the thick layer of grime a turn-off? XD) Agreed about the downfall of his character, and on top of that... I really don't think Reedus is a good enough actor to pull off being the lead. I mean, I love Reedus, but let's be honest - he is not a great actor. Also, Daryl is not leader material. I still don't buy him being right-hand-man material.
But a Carol-led TWD? I'm down. Let's go, McBride!
I can totally see Danai leaving. She has other options now, and they have relegated Michonne to 'Girlfriend of Prick', so she has no reason to stick around.
I think Reedus pretty much gives the best grunt on tv, but that is not a skill that translates to important character material, let alone leading man material. Plus his Cousin Itt hair would need to finally be cut and how on earth are they going to factor in THAT event given it has been 9 dang years of hair-face.
The only problem with Carol being in charge is that she'd solve the whole apocalypse in 1 episode and the show would be over... that settles it: put Carol in charge so we can be done with this.
No Prick. No Coral. It was nice knowing you, Michonne. I'm sorry they wasted all your glorious potential.
If we're getting rid of Prick and Maggie, I may not want to be done with this. They have been my biggest gripes since I can remember... will I actually like the show without them? I can't wait to find out. XD
