It\'s About Time! This Classic Comic Book Character Will Debut In \'X-Men: Apocalypse\'

X-Men: Apocalypse, the second Marvel offering from Fox this year, has a lot to live up to after the timeline warping events of X-Men: Days of Future Past and the well received X-Men: First Class. The next instalment in the movie series sees the formation and gathering of the young X-Men team as they face their greatest threat yet in the form of the oldest and most powerful mutant of them all - En Sabah Nur, better known as Apocalypse.

But it's also introducing and rebooting a bunch of characters we've seen both in the comics and on the big screen before. Whilst Apocalypse might tie up the origins trilogy it also means the beginning of something new, as director Bryan Singer put it to EW:

"This is kind of a conclusion of six 'X-Men' films, yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters. This is the true birth of the X-Men. This is how it happens."

With the timeline continuity reset following the events of

Days of Future Past, the new film will be the one to set up the cinematic X-Men, formulating a new team to carry the franchise from here on out. This gives them an almost unique opportunity to reboot and include key characters that were somewhat overlooked before; for example...

Chinese-American Jubilation Lee, later known as Jubilee, was born into a wealthy family in California. Her parents were murdered by hitmen in case of mistaken identity when she was young and she was sent to an orphanage from which she ran away. After spending some time hiding in a mall, stealing to survive and discovering her powers, she encounters X-Men members Dazzler, Psylocke, Rogue and Storm, whom she follows back to their base in Australia through a portal.

She hides in the base for a while, not knowing who the X-Men are at this point, and ends up rescuing Wolverine from Reavers. She travels with him for a while, and they develop a familial relationship. Wolverine later takes her to Professor X who welcomes her into the school and into the team.

At the time she was the youngest member of the X-Men, and called "a kid" by Psylocke, which she didn't much like.

Like all good comic book characters Jubilee's had her fair share of retconning. Originally her power was the ability to shoot bursts of energy from her fingers, which she called her "fireworks". She could mentally direct these bursts and explode them upon command.

But she's not all pretty lights, Jubilee could get real intense at times. Her power ranges from being able to temporarily blind someone to blowing things up and, interestingly enough, causing a stroke from exploding inside someone's brain.

It has been stated in the canon that she possesses unlimited potential; she's been regarded as one of the most powerful mutants in the team due to her ability to detonate matter on an atomic level - the equivalent of a fusion bomb. However she was usually very careful and cautious with her powers, fearing losing control of them and killing someone.

In the comics she's since lost those specific powers, gaining new ones in the form of superhuman strength, limited invulnerability and the ability to hover and even fly. Recently she also gained the powers of a vampire when she was bitten by the son of Dracula, but it's highly unlikely they'll use this storyline in the movie. (Though that would be one hell of a twist.)

Jubilee featured in nearly every episode of the popular

X-Men Animated TV Series from the early 90s, with a slightly tweaked background story wherein she was rescued from the orphanage by Cyclops rather than running away and being homeless.

But she's also actually appeared in the movies before, albeit in the form of cameo appearances in three of the

X-Men films, played by Katrina Florece and Kea Wong:

X-Men: Jubilee appears as an extra in Storm and Professor X's classrooms. In a deleted scene she is mentioned by name, talking to Shadowcat and Rogue.

X2: X-Men United: She appears again in another deleted scene near the beginning, where Pyro sets someone on fire in the museum. She's one of the six young mutants kidnapped by Stryker when soldiers storm the mansion and later rescued by Storm and Nightcrawler. She also appears in the final classroom scene, and speaks to Xavier briefly there.

X-Men: The Last Stand: Seen briefly near the beginning, sitting in the classroom with other students. She's also present at Professor X's funeral at the conclusion of the film.

Lana Condor portrays Jubilee in 'X-Men: Apocalypse'

X-Men: Apocalypse she'll be portrayed by newcomer Lana Condor in what will be Condor's first feature film. We saw her briefly in the trailer, sporting pretty faithful clothing to both her comic book and animated counterpart, but aside for that details of how her powers will be adapted and what role she will play is yet to be clarified.
