Fanpop Article: The PROPer use of PROPS!

Now, I Любовь Благодарности as much (or more) than the Далее person and when I go to my page and see that someone has дана me a благодарность I am in a happy little bubble for the rest of the day. I think this is a wonderful feature so that people can be recognized for their outstanding work. However, there is a etiquette that goes along with giving props. Благодарности are something Ты should give if Ты feel that a person has contributed something funny, substantial, unique, outstanding, или just plain awesome in your eyes. They are essentially a reward for hard work that Ты have done. They are like a virtual high five. They are not intended as venue for chatting with Друзья или saying hi to someone. It is also not fitting to благодарность back unless Ты are actually propping that person for something they did, and not just saying thanks to them for the благодарность they gave you. These are both things that can be done through a message. I personally Любовь messages almost as much as props, especially if they would be out of place as a prop. One thing I Любовь about Fanpop is that the people on here are so positive and sweet! Sometimes they are so positive that they are a little overzealous and give people Благодарности without a reason или just to say hi. I find it a little disconcerting that some people have 15 или 20 have not contributed anything. I also commonly see people who have Благодарности in categories that they have not contributed anything in. For example they have 7 Благодарности for Видео and have not contributed any videos. Benji made this AWESOME Форум on the Being Nice spot called "The Hug Topic" which is to recognize people for things that are not "prop worthy' but still deserve recognition (here's the link: link). By the way, I am not Письмо this soapbox to upset anyone; that is absolutely the last thing that I would want to do, because Ты are all so awesome! However, I do think that it is important to use this and other features in the way they were intended to be used.

sunsweetheart39 I completely agree. A couple of days ago I got a prop for videos, yet hadn't contributes any!! (It's not a huge deal, but I am glad that you pointed it out) :)

maybeastarbucks Amen. I feel my fanpop profile would be scarred if I got a prop that I didn't rightly deserve.

johnminh Great soapbox, temptasia. Whenever I get a prop, I just send a thank you note via the message system. As much as I pimp myself out for props, I don't want to get one that I haven't earned. =)

knifewrench Up-High-For-Cyber-Article-High-Five! I do have a question though. On The Fable Spot I have been posting forum competitions. Whoever answers the Fable-related question correctly gets a comment prop. Do you think this is a correct use of props?

snoznoodle Yeah it sort of squishes that warm feeling if someone Props you to say Hi. Comment props I suppose are for any comments you think are useful so I suppose that would be fine knifewrench. But I guess getting it as a prize wouldn't exactly give the same feeling. When a prop just pops up out of no where it feels pretty cool. Although you might want to take someone else's advice. Temptasia would know a bit more about it than me.

dave I've seen some of you guys start some pretty cool forum threads like games and other really creative ideas...we may have to create a new forum prop! Good call knifewrench! Totally love the article Temptasia, I think a lot of users are more familiar with a Wall or Comments like on Facebook or Myspace, so they are used to writing random messages on a profile that way. But we intended props to be more of a way to appreciate other users and thank them for their contributions. Maybe a separate wall would be useful? Or it might just be confusing...use the messaging everyone! Now you can block users you don't like in your message inbox too! :)

waterlilybarb I totally agree with you, and love the article. I don't have many props, but the few I have, I think I earned. It does make you feel good to get a little recognition for the effort you took to find good links or videos, or for the thought put into comments. Not everything needs to be commented on extensively, but some things do. I would also have to agree with you that I'm just as happy to receive a random message. It brightens my day to see something in my "mailbox" other than a new fan (although those are nice too). I've met some very cool people here, and hope to continue to do so.

Rockster See, i only recieved my first one about a month ago, i thought that was sensible due to that you need to put effort into some spots, im trying to get more props for comments in the pick by answering each one with a comment, Nice soapbox temptasia :D

ThinkPink20 Someone gave me props on my videos, and didn't explain anything. All they said was, "I just felt like giving you props." Then, later that week, they gave me props to explain the props, and that was no good. They're both bye-bye, because I didn't deserve them. Who wants to get something they didn't earn? It's not a good feeling!

Sappp I recently saw two users who got like 50 props from one users in all categories. With one user they all had a comment like 'happy birthday' and the other 'i'm sooooo sorry'. I'm more happy with the few props that I earned, than with 50 if that's how I've got them. (and it's confusing too because I thought the users must be really something to have so much props but they had not contributed all that much at all).

hooch-is-crazy I saw hulu's profile page not long ago, it's filled with props saying "please delete these videos" they're not even people saying hi, they're negative props

User20392 I completely agree with you. To be honest, I've still given random props to people before and still do it, but they're okay with it. It's mostly so I won't seem rude. Some weeks ago I added in my profile a small comment that says that I would appreciate that people would give me props I actually deserve. After all, I got tired of seeing my prop list and realizing I don't deserve most of them, I mean, what's the point of that, right? I guess I can try not giving out random props myself. Great article! ImAnEasel I SO agree!! I always try and give props for things that the person has actually done, instead of just giving a random links or pop quiz prop with a 'thanks for the add' message.
