From 'Game of Thrones' to 'Killjoys', Hannah John-Kamen is generating heat 

Dragons just seem to keep following Hannah John-Kamen.

Or maybe it\'s the other way around, and she\'s the one following the dragons.

Either way, John-Kamen\'s science-fiction series Killjoys is breathing more flames in Season 2, debuting Friday, July 1, across Canada on Space, as well as on Syfy in the United States.

In the first episode of the new campaign, John-Kamen\'s character, Dutch, is asked a simple question: “Why are you always chasing dragons?”

Dutch replies, “Because they\'re the ones with all the gold.”

Both the question and the answer were meant philosophically, rather than literally. But it\'s an amusing coincidence that dragons would come up at all, given John-Kamen\'s role as Ornela, one of the Dothraki widows, in the just-completed sixth season of Game of Thrones.

“That was totally not planned,” said John-Kamen, a 26-year-old English actress, speaking about the coincidental dragon connection. “But it\'s so fun, because I\'m also asking Emilia Clarke\'s character (Daenerys Targaryen), \'God, tell me about the dragons!\' ”

So can you confirm if there are any real dragons on the set of Game of Thrones?

“I wish I could say there were,” John-Kamen said.

“But the best thing for me about (Game of Thrones) was being able to play such a vulnerable character, something so different to Dutch. The juxtaposition of that, as an actor, that\'s what I love about this career, being able to morph into different characters.

“(Ornela) is a survivor. She\'s strong in that sense. But she was still a victim. And even the body language, the pitch and tone of that character in Game of Thrones, was so different from Dutch. And also speaking another language was very fun.”

You\'re saying Dothraki is not your native tongue?

“Unfortunately not,” John-Kamen said. “I wish it was.”

Killjoys, of course, centres on a trio of interplanetary bounty hunters – a.k.a. “Killjoys” – led by John-Kamen\'s Dutch, alongside John, played by Aaron Ashmore, and D\'avin, played by Luke Macfarlane.

“Identity crisis,” John-Kamen answered quickly and firmly, when asked to sum up the main hurdle that Dutch faces in Season 2.

“Is she good? Is she actually bad? She\'s dealing with the aftermath of what Khlyen (Rob Stewart) basically has trained her to be, which is a killer. You can\'t deny there is that side to her, so we definitely are going to see good and evil within Dutch.

“She has been betrayed, she really has. There is going to be a moment where it\'s like, \'I can\'t take this any more.\' We will see Dutch potentially make bad choices. She loses control sometimes, and it torments her to not be in control.”

As Season 2 begins, D\'avin has been abducted. We see Dutch staring into the vast expanse of the universe, vowing, “I will find you.” But this is the universe we\'re talking about here. It\'s not like losing your car keys under the couch cushions.

“That\'s just an indication of her willpower,” John-Kamen said. “It\'s Dutch. Even though he could be anywhere in the universe, she\'s going to find him.”

Speaking of willpower, John-Kamen admitted that playing Dutch on Killjoys has improved her confidence both as an actor and as a person, which has allowed her to land roles in some big movies. It recently was announced that she has been cast in Steven Spielberg\'s Ready Player One, and last year she also had a role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

“I absolutely think that playing Dutch has propelled me,” said John-Kamen, whose first big break came with her role in Viva Forever!, a British stage production based on the music of the Spice Girls.

“It\'s amazing that I get to play and create this character, obviously along with Michelle (Lovretta, Killjoys series creator). I admire Dutch so much, I love her and I look up to her. She inspires me.”

Given all the roles already on her resume, as well as the ones coming up, Hannah John-Kamen is on fire right now. In a good way. Relax, the dragons haven\'t become unruly.
