In the entire history of the Endangered Species Act,
wolves are the only species to go from protected to
hunted in a single day.
Packs include the mother and father wolves (called
the alphas), their pups and older offspring.
Gray wolves were once common throughout all of
North America, but were exterminated in most areas
of the United States by the mid 1930s.
Wild carnivores do not kill for fun; they kill to
survive.
Wolves have unique howls, like fingerprints, that
scientists (and other pack members) can use to tell
them apart.
Far more humans have been killed by bee stings,
accidental shootings during hunting season, and
domestic dogs than by wolves or other wild
predators, and many more people die from road
accidents with elk, deer and cattle than from all
wildlife attacks combined.
While wolf predation on livestock is fairly
uncommon, wolves that are suspected of preying
on livestock are often killed, sometimes even entire
packs.
More livestock are lost to other predators like
mountain lions, coyotes and even stray dogs than to
wolves. Far more are killed by disease, bad weather,
birthing problems and other natural causes.
