I think there alot of reasons for a person to have Anorexia. I think they don't get it just from weight loss. :)

I have a few friends who have lost/are losing weight, and they aren't anorexic. Most of them are very healthy eaters. I do have an anorexic friend, but she's always been skinny, so there hasn't been much weight loss there.

I've just recently lost some weight myself and I can assure you that I'm not anorexic! lol

Anorexia is a psychological disorder. You don't get it just by losing weight. There are many factors that contribute to it, not just weight loss. It's a coping mechanism for emotional problems. I think the statistic is 1% of females in the U.S. develop anorexia.

I don't think so,but it kinda depends on how much weight you want to lose. If somebody is starving themselves to lose weight they have a problem.

Always? No. Sometimes? Yes.

I COMPLETELY agree with fanfly-- anorexia is a physiological disorder & it's a way of coping with your emotional problems. I don't believe weight loss is the complete cause of anorexia- rather just a contributing factor. Anorexia isn't even really about the weight, it's about the person's emotional problems.

For example take this two imaginary people: let's call them Mary & Sue. Now this part leads into Jacoblackswife & why I wholeheartedly disagree with her comment...

Mary & Sue both want to lose 10 pounds-- they are both a little plump & they would like to become healthier. Mary comes from a very loving & supportive family & they're going to help her lose the weight by exercising more & eating healthier, more fruits & veggies, etc. Sue on the other hand comes from an abusive family & instead of losing weight the way I would call healthy, she loses the weight by starving herself. At the end of the month, they both lost the 10 pounds, but Sue ended up developing an eating disorder. Mary did not. So you see, they both lost weight but only one of them developed the disorder. So, I would really like to see the reasoning behind your thinking, Jacoblackswife, if you would like to explain it, I'm all ears. [well, eyes really. lol]

A lot of people that end up developing anorexia or any other eating disorder: I personally discussed with a few anorexic victims why they let it on for so long. 1 girl said that her mom was skinny than she was & she felt the pressure to lose a lot of weight to kind of compete with her-- so she'd become skinner than her mother. Another girl told me that she felt pressure because she was a little more rounder than other girls her age & she was verbally abused ex: 'fat cow' because she would jiggle whenever she moved & she started losing weight to get the abuse to stop. While it did, the emotional effects didn't. She would replay the comments over & over in her head & starve herself to destruction. She commented that she wanted to 'become a nothing, destroy herself until there was nothing left to destroy'. She would look at herself all the time in the mirror & just look at the inches of fat on her body, would get upset & starve herself more. Now this girl came from a very abusive family as well-- so the comments never really fully went away & she never got the support she really needed. She drove herself to insanity until one day she was rushed to the ER because she became unconscious & eventually she was admitted to a rehabilitation center so she could get better. She did actually, she was overlooked by a doctor that helped her lose weight the healthy way by exercising & such. She stopped surrounding herself by toxic people & found people that cared deeply for her-- she's better now but she went through a lot. To be honest, at first it became about the weight loss. But over time, it stopped being about it & started becoming about wanting to amount yourself into nothing....
Now I'll you in on a little secret. That second girl is ME. That happened to me. I wanted to destroy myself -- I became anorexic because I wanted to die & I was too much of a coward to do it another way. I'm better now, but I'll never forget what I went through.

Basically, I would just say that no, weight loss doesn't always cause eating disorders. It depends on what kind of background you come from, what kind of pressures you have-- if you want to lose a lot of weight please go see a professional & don't try to do it by yourself, especially if you come from an abusive family like me. I took advantage of the 'losing weight to become healthier' excuse & rather used it to hurt myself. I should've seen a professional in the first place, should've not trusted my depressed self. But I didn't listen & I paid the consequences. If someone you know who is like me [depressed, unhappy with themselves, etc] make sure you keep a close eye on them because people like that are capable of so many things you wouldn't even BELIEVE-- make sure they lose weight the RIGHT way so they don't have to go through what I did.

I apologize for the very long [& somewhat confusing, sorry I rambled on!!] but hopefully this will help you. :)
