When we\'re first introduced to Detective Kevin Corcoran on BBC America\'s first original scripted series, Copper, it\'s clear that like the late 19th century New York he inhabits, Corcoran is a state divided among himself. Amid an ambling sea of panhandlers, Civil War vets, and child prostitutes, he (\'Copper\' when on the job, \'Corky\' to his brazen band of Irish ex-pats) strives to find a modicum of justice in a city tainted by greed, hypocrisy, and racism. In real life, Tom Weston-Jones is a bit broader, and whole lot sweeter, than you\'d expect, with unblinking blue eyes and a butterscotch-thick British accent (even though he spent his formative years in Dubai, where his parents relocated to teach). "My girlfriend calls me \'Desert Boy,\'" he says of having missed sixteen years of pop culture. "There will be British

references and I\'ll go, \'I don\'t know what that is,\' and she\'ll go, \'Ah, right. Desert Boy.\'" A quick laugh and then, just like that, his craggishly handsome features reassume the trademark smirk of the best renegade regulator since The Wire\'s McNulty. Copper premieres Sunday, August 19 at 10 pm EST on BBC.

Hello, Hollywood: A relative unknown stateside, Weston-Jones, who currently lives in London, isn\'t quite ready to take his talents to Tinseltown. "Hollywood itself is a little intimidating and exciting," he says. "There\'s definitely a way to go about approaching it. As long as you do that in the right way, things can work out really well for you. I know certain actors who have done very well. They are still down to earth."

Shades of gray: "[The characters in Copper] seemed to have flaws in them, which is what I like in a script. I like when you read something and you feel like there is a human side to every single person. There isn\'t an obviously evil character: someone twiddling their mustache or running off with the TNT. Everyone is gray."

Top Chef: "I look cooking!" he says of staying bulked up for the brawny role. "Particularly pad thai."

Move over Mad Men: "I was quite jealous of the other characters. They have so many costume changes, but my character being from Five Points [the destitute downtown neighborhood considered the original American melting pot], I have about three pairs of pants. [Franka Potente\'s character] Eva goes through a big change towards episodes three and four. Everyone\'s style is finding its footing in the first episode. With Eva, that Steam Punk style becomes very powerful. I think she is going to be a fashion icon!"

Dream dates: "Jessica Rabbit!" he jokes before fessing up to crushing on Michelle Williams and Zooey Deschanel. "People wouldn\'t call her the most beautiful person in Hollywood," he says of the latter, "but I find her quirkiness and talent very attractive."
