I think the kiss on the cheek would've happened and then she wouldn't have given him the eye contact required to make the decision to kiss her. He only kissed her because the triangle stare and the eye contact was so intense, if it was Elena she would have reacted differently to everything he said, and he only would've kissed her on the cheek.
