I never found them to be very convincing.

I think they ARE just friends, excluding the sequel.
I do think the mini-crush Mulan has on him is cute, and so is his awkwardness at the end of the movie.
I guess I like to think they have just started a relationship as friends that could become something more over time.

None of them...the way those characters are portrayed, they belong together. And that includes Mulan and Shang, who might have the strongest bond of all the couples, even if it is when the movie ends just graduated to romantic love.

seeing how they had the most interactions and got more time to evolve but they do go well together
