I love Brave and the mother daughter story line but I felt like they were pushing something so cliche in movies with that part of the story line. I am glad she didn't find some stable boy and marry him for love instead of alliance because then it would just be too much for one film.

It was just a terrible movie in general.

Maybe it was trying a bit too hard, but I simply adore Merida how she is, so why change it?

They definitely horned in that stereotypical cliche in the advertising and interviews about Brave, but in the actual movie I don't think it's as bad as people make it out to be.

The beginning of the film, they were definitely trying too hard. But later in the story, they actually flesh out Merida's character as a realistic tomboy and more than just a walking "Girl Power" statement. However the movie's still atrocious, unoriginal, poorly executed and just plain bad.

Like sarchasm said, they did that more in the advertising than in the movie. Merida didn't want to marry not because of the "I'm a strong independent woman who don't need no man" mentality but because she didn't feel ready for marriage yet and because she wanted to be the one to choose her spouse, not her mother. There are other issues with the movie, but this definitely isn't one of them imo.

^^ I know I am a feminist myself. I think the story of a princess not wanting to marry suitors is VERY overdone.
I definitely agree the movie was more than that too, I just feel like it was marketed with that angle which made it seem repetitive.

@aubreybrooke Let me clarify something for you. No one's saying anything's wrong with feminism, we're just acknowledging what the writers, advertisers and other people involved are TRYING to perpetuate with these movies, whether or not they do a good job is a different story, but their INTENTION is to come off feminist.

When people call Merida a "feminist cliche" or Frozen a "feminist" movie in a negative light for example, it's kinda like how people call Pocahontas a "Native American stereotype". Being Native American is not bad and being feminist is not bad either. Am I making any sense?

I don't especially love Brave the way it is, but I do love Merida and wouldn't want her to change.

For me Merida is not a feminist cliche. Like MaidofOrleans said, she doesn't want to marry because she is not ready. I guess I agree with sarchasm, they did that more in the advertising than in the movie.

What MaidOfOrleans said. She didn't just never want to marry, she wasn't ready for marriage.

Yeah, it's just the annoying fans the ones that portray Merida as a "KILL ALL MEN" angry person (they do the same thing with Elsa; constantly patronizing the other princesses because how DARE they fall in love).

I really love Merida, and I don't think that she is too feminist. She just doesn't want to marry someone she doesn't love or even like.

What bothers me about the movie is that she tries to poison her own mother. I wouldn't mind the thing with the marriage if she didn't peek up when she sees the big guy. It comes off more of her not wanting to get married to idiots.
What bothers me about the movie are not the themes they try to address. I just think that it handles them badly.

Definetely ! I'd like her movie if it wouldn't Renessaince cliche with arranged marriages problem. And if Merida was brave. Not stubborn, not free-spirited, BRAVE. And heroic.

I loved how the mother/daughter relationship changed. That was my favorite part, because of this big connection I have with my mom. And how a mom would always defend their kids even if that meant that they might die. The ones that made this movie tried too much to try to make Merida a feminist all the time. I don't think that choosing archery was a bad thing at all, anyone can do it. She can always do archery when she is alone, since she always seemed to hang out with herself, it wouldn't be a damn problem. It's also not historically accurate that she could just choose anyone she wanted. In traditional times, everyone pretty much was forced to get married to someone they didn't want to. There was no other way. If she was a modern Scottish girl that wanted to choose her own man, sure, I'd have no problems with the movie. In fact, I wouldn't have watched it because it's not really my cup of tea. People who confuse fictional princesses with real life seem to be delusional. None of the pretty models in the world look like Disney princesses so I don't get the connection. I never wanted to look like a princess. I simply liked for example Snow White, but I didn't want her waist, her hips, her skin, nothing. I just liked her dress because it had my favorite colors.
