frozen was just generic scandinavia, coco did plot-relevant stuff but also a lot of nods to mexican culture that felt gimmicky (e.g. the frida kahlo gags)
They completely wasted a chance to show how rich Norwegian culture is. But they seemed to put a lot more effort into Moana, which did feel more natural, with the voice actors, music style, folk lore, etc.
i didn't know it was even supposed to be a specific nordic country. that's how basic the setting is.
But wrt Frozen, I think it's only unfamiliar to American audiences because the most Scandinavian stuff we ever see is generic blonde Swedes in braids and jumpers. Once I looked into Norway it definitely looks distinctive from Finland or Sweden with the town name (Arendal is a place), the fjords, rosemaling, vaguely Protestant religion, and food mentions. But it is rather generically Norwegian admittedly. Actual Norwegians complained that it didn't really resemble their culture (whereas Polynesians seem to feel quite differently about Moana.)
