Depends on where they're from. If I'm talking about the whole UK, I tend to use British as an umbrella term. Obviously if I'm addressing a specific location, I'll use the appropriate term.

i almost always say British!

I would say 90% of the time British and other 10% English

I've got to agree with Cinders too. If I know location, then I go by that, otherwise it's British or occasionally Brits.

Speaking as a scot it really annoys me when I get called English espacially when on holiday when i get asked the enevitable question... Are you from England? Then I say... No, I'm Scottish *irritable sigh* Then they say...Isn't that in England? I then usally say No then (if there american) Are you from Canada? that normally shuts them up. Sorry that was a bit of a rant but it happens all the time.

same here, i'm northern irish and when i try to explain they think i'm irish.
