Emily sat happily, proudly, surrounded by what had slowly, but surely, become “her guys” as the movie credits began to roll on the TV screen. She gave just enough of a stretch to be able to roust Hotch from his semi-sleep. “Movie’s over.”
“Huh?” the man gave a massive yawn. Just when it was about to hit its crescendo Emily quickly moved to put her hand over his mouth causing the man to give a quizzical look.
“Jack’s sleeping,” she whispered some.
Hotch looked over to find his son curled into a ball on the third section of the couch. The mere sight of his son at such peace made him beam from ear to ear. It also made him not want to risk waking the boy in order to put him into his own bed. Still, they couldn’t very well leave the tyke out in the living room. “I’ll go put him to bed,” Hotch сказал(-а) as he slowly forced himself to stand with a slight groan.
“Somebody’s getting old,” Emily teased with a soft laugh as she got up from the диван, мягкий уголок as well.
Hotch looked at her a moment, then gave a crooked smile, “Somebody should set a good example for my son and respect her elders.”
Emily laughed a little еще before touching Hotch’s shoulder as he bent down to collect little Jack, “Let me, Hotch.”
The man paused mid-bend, “Are Ты sure?”
“Yeah,” Emily gave a nod, “if Ты don’t mind, that is.” She wanted to be helpful, not overstep her bounds.
“No, of course not.” Hotch thought the offer rather sweet really. He liked the idea that Emily wanted to help out and get closer to Jack. He liked that she knew, in order to be a part of his personal life, she had to be a part of Jack’s life as a whole.
Emily smiled, “Great, then I’ll tuck Jack in and Ты can straighten up here,” she moved to give him a Kiss as they switched positions over the couch, “maybe get ready for me to respect Ты a little later?” she suggested with a wink.
Hotch arched his brows playfully for just a moment before nodding as he went to collect the blankets they’d brought out for the movie.
Emily watched the small boy for another moment, partly because she almost couldn’t bring herself to risk waking him either and partly because, well, she wanted to find the best way to carry him without increasing сказал(-а) risk. In the end she collected little Jack and his blanket into her arms as a whole unit that she then shifted against her body so that the boy’s head rested on her shoulder. The little boy mumbled some, but nothing that made sense to Emily.
Once in his room Emily let the boy slip easily, gently, away from her and into his bed. She made sure his little Футбол ball nightlight was on, that he had his Избранное toys nearby, and that he was properly tucked in so he’d want for nothing. “Night, kiddo,” she сказал(-а) softly before giving the вверх of his head a quick kiss. She wanted to and it felt right as she did.
“Night, Mommy. I Любовь you.” The words came out sleepily, but still clear as a bell, from little Jack’s mouth.
The woman who was completely capable of facing off any number of depraved minds, of never flinching at the most horrific crime scenes, was suddenly shocked. Stunned. Utterly and completely thrown. For a moment Emily felt dizzy and thought she might have to sit down. Of all the various things she’s expected Jack to ever say to her this was not one of them. “I…I Любовь Ты too, Jack,” Emily replied, feeling that she had to reciprocate his words even if they weren't really for her. Then she quickly slipped out of the room, leaving the door ajar as was customary.
By the time she reached Hotch’s bedroom the man was sitting up in постель, кровати reviewing some paperwork, his legs already tucked under the sheets and blankets. He smiled up at her, but quickly the smile was replaced by a look of concern, “Emily? What’s wrong?” Her worry, her upset, was written all over her face.
“What?” Emily hadn’t been focusing, but as she watched Hotch tuck away his work and Переместить to start to get out of the bed, she forced a smile, “Oh, no, nothing, don’t get up.”
“Okay,” Hotch settled back down though watched her carefully as she moved to get into the other side of the bed, “but something is bothering you.” He wanted her to know he knew, hoping it would get her to talk about whatever was wrong.
“It’s just something Jack said.”
“What did he say?"
Emily stayed silent as she seemed to focus on the sheets, as she really considered how this might play out once she revealed the statement to Hotch. She didn’t want to upset him, she loved him even if she hadn’t сказал(-а) it yet, and this sort of thing seemed potentially awkward at best. When she knew she couldn’t delay anymore she took a deep breath and looked at Hotch, deciding to go for it. “Jack said…he сказал(-а) ‘Goodnight Mommy, I Любовь you’.”
Hotch nodded a little, a thoughtful frown evident, “Well he was probably just tired, that’s all.”
“I don’t want to be Jack’s mommy,” Emily blurted out without thinking.
He wasn’t shocked, just deeply hurt. He knew how fond Jack was of Emily and he’d thought the woman felt the same for his son. “No one’s asking Ты to be,” he replied simply, if not a little coldly.
Emily looked over at Hotch when he spoke and immediately regretted her statement. или at least not clarifying it, “I don’t mean I don’t Любовь Jack, или Любовь being here for the both of you, I just, ” she thought a moment, wanting to make sure that this time her true worry would come across, “I don’t want to replace Jack’s mother. It’s too much, Hotch. The expectations, the pressure…I can’t live up to that.” Live up to the first woman Hotch ever loved, the woman that gave his beloved son life and raised him for the first four years of it, and the woman that Остаться в живых her life proclaiming nothing but Любовь for the two until very end.
Hotch’s look softened significantly and he moved to pull Emily closer to him, wrapping his arms securely around her. “No one wants или expects Ты to replace Haley, Emily,” he stated softly, “It wouldn’t be fair to either of you.” It would suggest Haley were replaceable and Emily just a filler and neither things were true. Hotch gave Emily’s temple a kiss, “Take Jack’s words as a good sign, Emily, a sign that he’s comfortable around you, that he senses how much Ты care for him, and nothing more.”
Emily began to smile some as she relaxed, reassured by Hotch’s words. “Is it alright if we just go to sleep?” She felt better, but still not exactly in the mood for anything else.
“Of course.” Hotch moved to turn off his bedside lamp and get farther under the blankets of the bed. And, once Emily had done the same, he wrapped an arm around the woman and pulled her closer to him “Goodnight Emily.” He gave her shoulder a Kiss through the tee рубашка she wore.
“Night Hotch.” Emily replied softly. She lay there thinking for some time before smiling as she remembered Jack’s little face as he slept and realized her reply to him, that she loved him too, was completely truthful. She loved little Jack and she loved Hotch and she loved that they both allowed her, and helped her, to find a comfortable spot in their world.
