Volkova was born in a middle-class family in Moscow. At the age of 6, Volkova enrolled in Музыка school and began learning how to play the piano. When she was 9, Volkova became a member of the children's Пение chorus Neposedi, from which she would later meet fellow t.A.T.u singer, Lena Katina.
At age 11, Volkova transferred to a school fostering artistic talent, and three years later left Neposedi to Присоединиться Тату She has insisted that she was banned from Neposedi for drinking and swearing, but Neposedi representatives deny this, saying that she simply graduated as all of their members did at a certain age.
In February 2003, Volkova was reported to have had an abortion, after being spotted at an abortion clinic in Moscow. It was later confirmed by Volkova in the 2003 documentary series "Anatomy of t.A.T.u.". In May 2004, Volkova announced that she was pregnant, her then long-time boyfriend Pavel Sidorov being the father. Daughter Viktoria Pavlovna Volkova was born on 23 September 2004 amongst controversy created when Sidorov left his wife and baby for Yulia and Viktoria. Volkova would comment, saying "Obviously we won't be celebrating a wedding." [1] Volkova gave birth to her секунда child, Samir, on December 27, 2007. The following summer, Volkova was diagnosed with postpartum depression which resulted in the cancellation of a концерт on June 19.[2]

In early 2004, Volkova's voice began to deteriorate during the recording of t.A.T.u.'s секунда album, after developing a vocal fold cyst. Despite the reluctance of t.A.T.u.'s management, she underwent surgery to remove the cyst in October 2004.
