- Both sought vengeance
- Their motives are both based on the loss of a loved one
- They both tried to force someone to be with them (Belle and Henry)
- Both are very complex
- Both have very compelling back stories
- Both have two sides goo and evil
- Both admitted/implied they don't know how to love very well (Gina admitted it, Rumple kind of implied it upon asking for love advice)
- Both ended up pushing that loved one away some how
- Both are having hard times
And probably a lot more.
-They're both trying to get the other (Belle & Henry) to 'love/like' them back.

I also agree that Rumple is better at hiding his emotions and keeping them in control where as Regina tends to let them sneak through.
(Rumpel in ''The Crocodile'', Regina in ''We are both'')
You could say that they do similar things or lost a loved one or whatever, but in general terms of character they are really different.
Gold is more subtle, more experienced, and really just smarter than Regina, whereas Gina gets too emotional and allows it to dictate her decisions.
Gold is more strategic also. Everything he does is meticulously planned so that everything goes exactly how he wants in order to achieve a certain goal. This is why Belle always throws him off. She tampers with the emotional side of him and gets him sidetracked. As far as we can tell, Regina plays it by ear. Had she planned properly for her revenge on Snow, she would have known true love would break the poison apple curse, and also factored in that Charming could possibly escape with the help of some untrustworthy knights/sex slaves. She also would have gone further than a curse, even one given to her by Rumple, because all curses can be broken (dearie.)
Don't get me wrong, I love both of them, but the way they carry themselves is so different.
And as far as selfishness, I'm not going to defend either one. They have both done incredibly selfish things simply because it is in their nature. Regina got Sidney sent to a psych ward and killed Graham. Rum brought magic and killed his wife. Neither one is more innocent or less so than the other.
I think people sometimes take a stronger liking to Rumple because we constantly see a softer side of him now with Belle, and with his motives (Bae.). Since Regina has lost love, lost everything, she has nothing left to be a better person for. Sure, we see it with Henry, but it's not as prominent. And you can argue SwanQueen, I guess, but it's not the same at all. Regina obviously loves Henry, but she also loved her father and killed him for revenge. Now, I'm not saying she could kill Henry, but just like with Rum, power still means more to her deep down. Her revenge gets the better of her, and when Henry is not even making an effort or giving her any feasible hope, it is easier to get wrapped up in power and such. Rumple has some hope with Belle and even some with Bae, and it is driving him to be somewhat different because it is happening now, and he didn't make the mistake of sending anyone they loved back to war-zone FTL.
So. That was my rant. Ya'll really got me excited on this question. But, yeah, that's how I feel, and ya'll of course are free to agree or disagree with me.
