"ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) Review

Years ago, I used to watch a great deal of old Фильмы on late night television. My two Избранное channels that offered these Фильмы were Turner Network Телевидение (TNT) and the American Фильмы Classic (AMC), which used to air Фильмы without any commercial breaks. On TNT, I had stumbled across a Western movie originally released by MGM Studios in 1953 called "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) and fell in Любовь with it. After watching my recently purchased DVD copy of the movie, I could see why it became a Избранное of mine.

Directed by John Sturges during the...

”THE WINDS OF WAR” (1983) Review

Some forty-five years ago, Автор Herman Wouk wrote ”The Winds of War”, a bestselling novel about the experiences of a middle-aged U.S. Navy officer and his family during the early years of World War II. A decade later, ABC Телевидение and producer David Wolper brought his story to the Телевидение screen with a seven-part, fourteen-and-a-half час miniseries that became a ratings hit and a major Emmy and Golden Globe nominee.

Produced by Dan Curtis and Barbara Steele, and directed by Curtis; ”THE WINDS OF WAR” was a sprawling saga that told the story...

"TOM JONES" (1963) Review

Recently, I searched my memories for any Фильмы produced outside of the United States that not only won the Academy Award for Best Picture, but I would also consider a personal Избранное of mine. Only one came to mind - the 1963 movie, "TOM JONES".

"TOM JONES" turned out to be the секунда non-Hollywood film that won the coveted Oscar prize. Directed by Tony Richardson, the movie is an adaptation of Henry Fielding's 1749 novel, "The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling", about the coming-of-age and misadventures of an illegitimate young man, raised by a landowner in mid-18th...

Below is a review of "THE BLACK DAHLIA", the 2006 adaptation of James Ellroy's 1987 novel:

"THE BLACK DAHLIA" (2006) Review

Judging from the reactions among moviegoers, it seemed quite obvious that director Brian DePalma’s adaptation of James Ellroy’s 1987 novel had disappointed them. The ironic thing is that I do not share their feelings.

A good number of people – including a relative of mine – have told me that they had expected "THE BLACK DAHLIA" to be a docudrama of the infamous 1947 murder case. Others had expected the movie to be an epic-style crime drama similar to the 1997 Academy...

"THE SHADOW RIDERS" (1982) Review

When I first set out to discover how many of Автор Louis L'Amour novels had been adapted for the Фильмы and television, I had assumed at least a handful had gone through this process. I was surprised to discover that many of his works had been adapted. And one of them turned out to be the 1982 Телевидение movie, "THE SHADOW RIDERS".

I have only seen two L'Amour adaptations in my life - "THE SHADOW RIDERS" and the 1979 two-part miniseries, "THE SACKETTS". Both productions seemed to have a great deal in common. The two productions are adaptations of L'Amour (which...

"MIDDLEMARCH" (1994) Review

Many years have passed since I first saw "MIDDLEMARCH", the 1994 BBC adaptation of George Eliot's 1871 novel. Many years. I recalled enjoying it . . . somewhat. But it had failed to leave any kind of impression upon me. Let me revise that. At least two performances left an impression upon me. But after watching the miniseries for the секунда time, after so many years, I now realize I should have paid closer attention to the production.

Directed by Anthony Page and adapted for Телевидение by Andrew Davies, "MIDDLEMARCH" told the story about a fictitious Midlands town...

"SENSE AND SENSIBILITY" (1971) Review

For some reason, I still find it hard to believe that until recently, very few people were aware that the first adaptation of Jane Austen's 1811 novel, "Sense and Sensibility", dated as far back as 1971. After all, people have been aware of other Austen adaptations during this same period или earlier. Even the Wikipedia site fails to mention it, except in connection with one of the cast members. What was about this four-part miniseries that eluded so many Austen fans?

In "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY", a wealthy landowner named Mr. Dashwood dies, leaving his two...
