Peyton Sawyer was originally supposed to be the main girl that Ты were supposed to think was just this broody, annoying, pouty, stuck up Популярное girl... until as season 1 progressed Ты start to realize her pain. Ты start to understand еще about her. And so we find out that the Purpose of Peyton was to bring darkness and meaning to the show. The other characters are also very important, but Peyton was meant to be the girl that has been through so much, she's supposed to teach Ты to not judge a book by it's cover (just like Brooke). She plays the role of the most human person there is, a mistake-maker, but a very loveable character. Ты hate her at times and Ты Любовь her at times, she's the main entertainment of OTH. She also has the baddest Karma and Bad luck. Whenever she makes a mistake, she pays for it the most. And, even when she hasn't made a mistake she still gets let down quite a bit. Peyton Sawyer is here to give hope to girls (and even boys :]) that watch the show. She's living, breathing evidence of the statement "you'll be okay".
Now, as for the leyton situation, I think they put that in because Lucas is supposed to be the person that turns on the light when she is Остаться в живых in the darkness. Now, leyton isn't my Избранное couple, not even in my favorites, but even I have to admit that Lucas was the one that made her smile. The one that helped her when she was helpless. He was ALWAYS there during her tragedies. Sure, Brooke, Haley, and Nathan are good Друзья to her, but not even the help from great Друзья like them could have helped her like Lucas did. The leyton relationship was also supposed to give hope to viewers that are like Peyton. :]
