Spike Article: I really dislike people who hate Spike.

I've recently been looking on Болталка websites for Статьи about BTVS, just to read other people's opinions. I've found out it just isn't a great thing for me to do, as I find myself so worked up by people dissing Spike's character, stressing him as the major element in the downfall of BTVS.

This website, for example, claims that Spike is a "too-cool thug in a leather jacket" who "has diverted a good Показать from its original mission: To celebrate the uncool outcasts of the world."

This website, too, fired my anger and disgust. It claims similar opinions, including, "you can chart the rise of Spike as an allegedly "lovable" character as the downfall of BTVS." Downfall my ass. Spike was such a major character in BTVS and crucial to its success in many ways, and this has been proven in the Последнее SFX magazine's Список of vampires, on which Spike came in as #1. Everyone loved Spike, and I personally thought his plot lines were edge-of-your-seat stuff. Particularly in season 6 (which happens to be my favourite season) we saw an edgier, darker side to the Показать and a lot of that was contributed by Spike himself and his platonic relationship with Buffy.

"But when Spike isn't wishing he could start murdering every human in sight again, he's pining after Buffy, following her around and moping like a schoolboy. It's like the darker, less noble — and less interesting — version of Angel's season-one stalkerhood." Quite the contrary, lots of people would agree that Spike's stalkerhood of Buffy was funny, entertaining and sad at the same time, courtesy to James Marsters' and Sarah Michelle Gellar's Актёрское искусство ability and chemistry.

While the Автор of this Статья raves on about Spike's pitiful wimpishness and moping, Spike is widely known for his flippant and badass attitude. It is only really in Season 7 when he gets "mopey" so to speak, and he has a good reason for doing so. He tried to rape Buffy in season 6, something he found incredibly difficult to deal with. He just couldn't forgive himself. It isn't something Ты can just jump back from.

I don't think Spike was weak AT ALL. He gave up his life to save the world from the First, he regained his soul by going through incredibly dangerous tests to redeem himself for what he had done to Buffy, and to вверх it all off he was a funny, witty, badass, memorable character and one of the most loved, prolific and amazing Вампиры of all time.

fanfly I recognized that first article you mentioned; it made me mad too. Spike is a fascinating, complex character who's gone through such incredible and well thought out development throughout the series that it's hard for me to fathom that anyone could deem him a detriment to the show. They compare his relationship with Buffy to Angel's and call it less interesting which frankly just makes me laugh. Angel and his relationship with Buffy doesn't have half the complexity, depth and development of Spike and Buffy. I understand that Angel was developed on his own show, but on Buffy he really isn't developed that much. And his romance with Buffy is incredibly juvenile and one-dimensional. Spike and Buffy's romance is dark, multi-layered, not always healthy but more real than the 'first love' she had with Angel. And therefore worlds more interesting for me. People may not like Spike, but I don't understand how they can't see that his character served a vital purpose in the show. For example, [as you may have guessed] I don't like Angel. Really don't like him. But I can appreciate the purpose he served on the show [until S3 when they inexplicably brought him back and he had no purpose whatsoever other than to mope around and depress everyone]. Speaking of moping- Angel definitely takes the cake on that one. Ok, I'm ranting now, so I'm going to shut up. Anyway, great article and I agree- anyone who can't see that Spike added to the show is just nuts! lol

HMKOlovesBTVS I agree with everything you're saying! Especially about Angel - I've tried to like him, but there's just something missing with his character in general. I'm watching Angel currently, and I'm up to season 3 and I still don't like him. I don't know what it is. He's not even brooding at the moment but there's still something. I've always liked Spike though, he just oozes likeability.

grapecandy I totally get what your saying.. spike is such is such a amazing character and it really amazes me when I look at all the things his gone through..he is definately not weak at all... I too also get upset when people blame the downfall of BVTS on spike.. He is by far one of the most important and stongest charater on the show and it would not be the same without him.. The realationship between Buffy and Angel is sweet but with Buffy and Spike it just goes to a whole different level and the depth in their realationship between the two throughout the whole show is really hard to miss. Their realationship keeps changing, moving forward unlike with Bangel, where it just stops in season three.. I've really always loved Spikes character from the very beginning but what makes me really respect him was the way in season six episode touched when all of the scoobie gang were against Buffy, Spike was the only one who actually stood up for her and supported her. He was always there for her, fighting along side her no matter what. Another factor i would like to outline that compares the two vampires Spike and Angel is Spikes determination to be a good person. He willingly went through drastic amount of touture to get his soul back and not to mention the pain he went through afterwards as well.. while Angel/us was a vampire he never had that in him to WANT to be good..it was more thrust apon him... the clear contast between the two has always been one of the many reasons why i believe spike has always been a stronger character between the two..

Shelby13 I read the part about how the show was supposed to celebrate the outcasts and just thought "Spike is the ultimate outcast." He had no friends or girlfriends when he was human, he didn't fit in with the rest of the Scourge, especially Angelus after he became a vampire, he was chipped and therefore didn't fit in with demons, but he still wasn't accepted by the Scoobies... do I really have to go on? I think I made my point. And if anything ruined Spike's character it was going on Angel. Any time they made a joke at his expense I just cringed. He was an amazing, strong character on Buffy and I felt like they made him the butt of the jokes on Angel. He got beaten up by puppet Angel for god's sake!! He has killed 2 slayers and been tortured by a god (etc.... there's a lot I could list), there's no way a puppet would have beaten him down. Spike is easily the best character on that show. Everyone should love him. It's just common sense. :p haha

fanfly ^^Exactly! Spike never fit in anywhere, no matter how hard he tried. I never cared for Angel but I tried to watch it when Spike was on it and they just butchered his character. They made him seem so one-dimensional. I think because if he'd been the same Spike as he was on Buffy, then he totally would have stolen the show from Angel. And they couldn't have that. :PPP

maryksand Thanks for the article. Very true. I'm a big spuffy fan and I adore Spike and feel extremely sad when some people say he ruined the show. Spike was one of the richest characters of BTVS. The best thing in season 7 was Buffy/Spike relationships. Can anyone imagine BTVS without Spike and Spuffy? I don't think so. I think even haters understand how important Spike was to the show and to Buffy, though they will never admit it... What I really disliked is how Spike was written in ATS, I think the writters ruined his character a lot, but still I admit that Spike and Angel needed to work together for some time. Btw, Spike's appearance in ATS was a network's condition: without Spike ATS would have been cancelled after Season 4.

voxleo Well, Shelby13, while he may have been beaten by a puppet I'm sure his own state of hilarity over Angel's condition was a handicap in that fight. Let's not forget, when it came down to it, Spike did beat Angel to the Holy Grail in the ultimate test of wills, even though it was only Mountain Dew. I think that fight defines which of them truly has more heart when all is said and done, and I think the outcome would be the same anytime in a fair fight (not one with Twilight/SuperAngel). I agree that Spike has earned what he has while Angel suffers under the weight of his curse. And even after their universe-creating superboink across the sky with Angel, Buffy STILL fantasizes about Spike! I think the only reason she has any attachment to Angel is because of the whole "first love" teenage angst thing; that can really stick with you, even when you know better. Spike is the more adult and better choice even though he didn't start out that way. Frankly, I never really got the whole attraction to Angel in the first place. Must be because he's tall...

About Spike haters and double standards

Ok, here I go. First, I wanna apologize for my English, because it's quite bad (I'm Russian).

I was really impressed (in a bad way) by the Комментарии most of Spike haters make all over the internet. All of those Комментарии seem to be very alike: "Spike was bad, while Энджел was good". I could never understand this statement. Let's see:
