"When?" A voice asked. It was Annabeth, invisible.
"Long story," Nico said, looking at Hades.
Hazel's mouth tasted like metal, as if golf nuggets were popping under her tongue.
"I LOVE MC DONALD'S CHICKEN NUGGETS!" Leo said. Nico stuck out his tongue and Annabeth(who was now visible), cringed.
"Then it's true about Death? Is Alcyoneus to blame?"
"I think so," Nico said. "It's getting bad in the Underworld. Dad's going crazy trying to keep under control. From what Percy said about the gorgons, things are getting worse up here, too. But look, that's why you're here. All that stuff about your past -- you can make something good come out of it/ You belong at Camp Jupiter."

Everybody looked at Nico who was biting his lip. "Guys, somewhere during this, I am going to leave. Got it. I need to find something.... Something really important." Nico said, remembering something.

That sounded so ridiculous, Hazel almost laughed.
"Why?" Connor asked
"If we read on, we will find out." Thalia said, like she was telling something to a third grader.
"Connor ain't an idiot," Nico said, in the same voice, mocking Thalia.
"Would you shut up Death Breath!"
"Why should I Shock?"
"Wow and I thought Percy was bad at giving nicknames."
"Like your original Tree Face!"
"SHUT UP!" Piper said, the bickering of the cousins stopped and were in a glaring contest.
She didn't belong in this place. She didn't even belong in this century.
Connor was about to say something but Thalia glared at him.
"I WON!" Nico shouted.
"What?" Jason asked.
"I won the glaring contest between Thalia and I!"
"Oh."
She should have better than to focus on the past, but she remembered the day when her old life had been shattered. The blackout hit her so suddenly, she didn't even have time to say Uh-oh. She shifted back in time.
"Cool!" Connor, Travis, Hermes, and Leo shrieked.
Not a dream or a vision. The memory washed over her with such perfect clarity, she felt she was actually there.
Her most recent birthday. She'd just turned thirteen. But not last December--- December 17,1941, the last day she had lived in New Orleans.

"DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!" Travis said, while Connor played on an organ.
"Wait," Nico said." Where did you get the organ?"
"The internet!" Connor said.
"Finally," Jason said, turning the page. "We finally ended the chapter!"

"BREAK TIME!" Hermes shouted and gold dust exploded. "HERMES!" Athena shouted. Hermes, Travis, and Connor were rolling on the floor, laughing.

After the break, Hera returned.
"Hello guys." She said.
Everyone mumbled a hello.

"Who's reading?" Jason asked.
"I will," Nico said.
Nico picked off where they left off.
Hazel was walking home alone from the riding stables. Despite the cold evening, she was buzzing with warmth. Sammy has just kissed her on the cheek.
"AWWWW!" Piper and Aphrodite cooed. Piper slapped her hand over her mouth, but it was too late.
They day had been full of ups and downs.
"She was on a roller coaster? SWEET!" Connor shrieked. Everyone just face palmed.
Kids at school had teased her about her mother, calling her a witch and a lot of other names.
Nico glanced at Hades, who looked paler than ever.
That had been going on for a long time, of course, but it was getting worse. Rumors were spreading about Hazel's curse. The school was called St. Agnes Academy for Colored Children and Indians, a name that hadn't changed in a hundred years. Just like its name, the place masked a whole lot of cruelty under a thin veneer of kindness.
"Wait!" Travis shouted. "Two questions, 1: What does 'masked' mean and 2: what does 'veneer' mean?"
"Well masked means-" Annabeth started.
"I DON'T WANT AN HOUR LECTURE INVOLVING A POWER POINT!" Travis shouted and Annabeth put away her flash drive.
"Well then, go get a dictionary." Annabeth retorted.
Travis ran out to get one.
Hazel didn'understand how other black kids could be so mean. They should've known better, since they themselves had to put up with the name-calling all the time. But they yelled at her and stole her lunch, always asking for those famous jewels: "Where's those cursed diamonds, girl?
"THAT'S THE CURSE!" Connor shrieked.
"I thought you went with Travis to get the dictionary," Thalia said.
Connor shrugged.
Gimme some or I'll hurt you!"

"Mean!" Nico and Thalia said in unison
"EWWWWW!" Nico shrieked. "Me AGREEING with THALIA! WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TO!????!??!?!??!?!"
