I think he turned his emotions off so he could abandon his friend, not as a result of it. He did it because he wouldn't be able to do such a thing with his emotions on.
I also think he thought he will die if he tried anymore.
He feels very guilty about it, and I think the main reason he kept on going with his revenge plan, even after he turned on his humanity and was happy with Elena was because of this.
And that scene was so sad! My heart broke for both of them :'(
